I just recently got into AR's last year and had the same dilemma. I decided to get a starter rifle, and learn the platform with a warranty, before undertaking a build.

So I bought a NJ compliant S&W M&P15 online on a really good sale. My FFL put a spur grip on it and destroyed the OEM grip. That is all that is needed, and you are set.

The rifle shoots really great, groups great, and zero hiccups. I liked it so much, as is, that I bought the M&P10 version, and I'm done.

I have two great shooting rifles that give me no issues, and now I'm building an R/C car, lol.

What I find real interesting is how these dealers can actually say that a particular AR is NY compliant. I am sure that the NY AG or the SP didn't give their blessing to what is a go or a no go. Just because it has a spur instead of a pistol grip? or the AR has one of those devices that prevent you from removing the mag while the gun is operational? These dealers are taking it upon themselves to say that their AR's are compliant when in reality, they received no guidance from either the AG or SP. I don't know of any cases where anyone has been arrested for having a so called compliant AR but that doesn't mean that they are. Just my $.02

I agree.

About the only case law we have is someone arrested with a Thordsen stock and later having the charges dropped and the rifle returned to him. The case is posted somewhere on this forum.

How deep into Nassau County are you? I live in Western Suffolk. I'd be happy to put together the pieces for you. The other option is Campsite in Huntington Station is probably the best shop on the island in regards to customer service. Ask for Paul or Doug.

Paul helped me build my first AR by helping me pick parts and cutting me discounts on what i got from him. He'd happily put together your rifle for you at no cost if you asked for help. He extended me the same offer when I was debating building a complete upper rather than buying one.

So with a detachable mag, youre looking at different featureless stock systems. Google 'featureless stock' and a variety of choices will pop up. Each has pros and cons. None will be as ergonomic as a pistol grip. A spur/fixed stock is the best way to go if you wish to be able to swap 1 part and have a facsimile of a full featured AR should you take it out of state for whatever reason. Thordsen is probably the besr all around for handling though it's ass ugly, but if you're used to bolt actions the grip style is basically identical.

Most of your features after that are entirely dependent on what your expected ranges are. If you're mainly shooting 100 and under, and wanting a HD component that's a 16" barrel probably an HBAR profile. You're gonna want a 223 wylde barrel so you can shoot 223 and 5.56 without losing accuracy because of case dimensions.

A lot of the choices are the same, it's only what look you want that affects many of em. If you want a rifle that just goes bang, the Ruger AR is good, Smith & Wesson MP is good. Even with everything going on prices are still super low. You could get a quality featureless rifle, couple mags, a holosun 500 series red dot, and a Streamlight HL weapon light for under $1100 easy. Factor in a few hundred rounds of ammo, maybe some high end defensive stuff, add another $200.

If you do build, vice grips, some brass punches, an ar wrench, and a rubber mallet are all highly suggested.

you can also throw in knee pads, and maybe a magnifier, for when you lose the springs....P.S. if you do build, get an extra set of LPK

The place was as busy as the mall on Christmas Eve. They told me people are basically hoarding AR parts now, they can't keep stuff on the shelves. They had a lower assembly kit. Is that worth getting (I think it was $65) or am I better off sourcing my own parts?

CMMG? If youre going featureless the grip is basically useless except for if you swap out parts to go into a state where ARs arent heavily regulated. If you can find online a LPK with no grip, but DOES contain the fire control group (trigger/hammer/safety) for under that then I'd go for it. CMMG is really good starting point. Trigger is good, not great. But for your first rifle it's gonna be perfect for you to feel out what you like and don't.

Most LPKs are largely the same beyond the bargain ones. The extra $$ is for higher quality triggers and grips. Maybe ambidextrous controls.

I see several options that look interesting. The spur grip and an enhanced trigger guard look like it might be decently comfortable given the legal restraints. Not a big fan of the super angled stock/grip setup, but those seem to be pretty popular as well. As far as triggers, holy cow there are so many options and price points. Really makes your head spin. I'm left handed so I was thinking the ambi safety might be a cool option as well.

Want a damn good trigger, cheap,,,buy a Rock River Arms varmint trigger for 96 bucks. Just bought one for a buddy straight from RRA. I personally have 2 Geissele SSA-E triggers and a RRA Varmint trigger. All 3 are 2 stage triggers with light pull, no creep.

Build is on the way, picked up a lower assembly kit yesterday and ordered a spur+patrick henry from BulletGuy last night.

Next up, a fixed stock and complete upper. I think I want to go carbine, I would need to pair that with a particular buffer tube correct?

This was easy to build except for installing the binary trigger.

You can build it yourself easy. Just be precise with the punch on the roll pins and use the flat of a razor to hold the detent down while you put the from take down pin in.
