So, lets assume you have a bunch of parts laying around that you either need to sell, or, turn into another project. Let's assume that so long as that project is an AR pistol you have everything you need other than a barrel and a few little things. What would you build, a 300 pistol or a 5.56 pistol? Let's also assume that you don't need either - you just want one. Which would you build and why?

I would be tempted to say 5.56 simply because ammo is easier to come by. But it really comes down to personal preference.

Too many builds in the que to think of building another AR Pistol but, I would do another 300BLK just because I only have one and it is lonely. Probably look like this, 10.5 inch barrel, claymore brake, 12 inch hand guard, KAK blade.

of course it Would all be built on an 80% lower, just to irritate the anti gunners reading this thread.

All I am doing is fantasizing. I am so far from having gun money it's laughable. I'm starting a new job in a couple weeks, maybe after I get everything stabilized I can start accumulating parts. I'd put it together myself except for the barrel and gas block.
It would be a high dollar build, 2A Armament lightweight receiver set, JP Industries barrel, Magpul PRS stock and PRI delta carbon fiber handguard. Thinking a Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 for an optic. The goal being to have something of a SPR/Bench rifle hybrid i.e not too heavy.
I am prioritizing some kind of 5.56 or possibly 7.62x39 pistol. For a truck gun.

The general consensus is that 10.3" is the shortest length that can be considered fully reliable, that length being the shortest a carbine length gas system can accommodate. Anything shorter requires a "pistol" length gas tube and this will require some fine tuning to get running properly and with such a short dwell time the action will be cycling abruptly. Lately the 11.5" has gained favor as an all round SBR length being quite compact yet not pushing the timing of the action to its reliability limits.

“Positive development”... 12.5” has a number of benefits!

If suppressors will not be used the 12.5" is a popular choice. The 11.5" is kind of a hedge tour bets configuration. Thats they way I would go with a "pistol" build. I am told the waiting time for NFA items in free states is down to 3-4 months if the paperwork is filed electronically.
