Most importantly be ready and able to defend/ offensively you and yours with no hesitation right or wrongly.

I don't reply here much, but as the weenies in DC embolden our enemies and some justifiably would say that "they are the enemy too", it's not a farfetched question. I have a lot of "stuff" to come out the other side ok. What I lack in supplies are easily attainable by those who have failed to be prepared. 'nuff said. You like minded folks know exactly how to proceed in a SHTF scenario.
In addition, Marine Band and/or Aircraft Band Radios should be considered for a little more op-sec.
Not as many people will have Marine Band Radios outside of Boats on the Water and even fewer will have aviation radios.
If you're thinking of monitoring or even being able to transmit with Government entities, you can pretty well forget it unless you have "trunking" Digital equipment that's expensive...even a scanner is going to be pricey.,
Satellite Phones aren't cheap, but work damn near anywhere in the World, and short of an "Independence Day" alien take over of our Satellites or them getting nuked out of orbit, they'll work when nothing else does.

Musk is turning up a direct to satellite cell network.
All the starling satellites he has been launching lately have that capability.
Basically works just like a regular cell network except the towers are all in orbit.
Would use normal cell phones as transceivers. It's intended to compete directly with existing cell providers on price and capability. Which is why they are fighting it in court tooth and nail.
Not as rugged as a good HF transmitter, it does rely on external infrastructure, but it also doesn't need 100 feet of antenna either.
Pretty cool looking into the nighttime sky and seeing that long bar of "lights" from the Starlink...freaks people out that don't know what it is though.
Wonder what's going to happen (if it isn't already) when private companies start salvaging Space debris and defunct craft in orbit?

Starlinks are in a very low orbit for a variety or reasons, not the least of which is that they will decay and burn up in just a couple years if they lose control of one.
I think we are a very very long way from actually salvaging debris in space.
But, Musk did get the contract to bring the ISS down in a few years when they decomission it.
Not to salvage, just to drop it in the ocean at point Nemo.
I think it's fair to say the world and country are worse off today than we were last week.

Prep hard y'all. Prep like the zombie apocalypse is inbound. Most will never attain the level of preparedness we hope to achieve. If you get prepped for the apocalypse, lesser events will be just a speed bump to ya. As PJF says do the best you can, where you're at, with what you got. If things go sideways you'll be glad you did, if things don't get as bad your preps should endure over time if things get worse you'll be glad you did.

Reading the thoughts and ideas of many members here over the years has assisted me greatly.
I mentioned this before... I gave up so much leaving NY and moving down here. Moving here was a direct result of what I believe is coming.
We are spending a lot of time and resources to ensure we have all that is needed.
The term that you use.... zombie apocalypse, it is my go to phrase when talking with others about prepping. Will we ever get them? Probably not, but like you said, if you are ready for them, you are ready for most things.
That's awesome and very encouraging.
I'm working on some life changes now. Trying to get things in order and paying down debt. We have a plan to pay off all credit card debt, a loan, and a vehicle payment (if nothing major comes up first) in the next ~10-12 months. I know that's not fun or exciting but at that point the only debt to our names will be our mortgage. That's our current short term goal. I am financially prepping to have more freedom.
Once we reach that point we will have more options available to us and moving out of state seems more realistic and feasible if we can pay off debt and put aside a cushion that I'm sure we will need in the process for many many unplanned or under estimated expenses along the way.
I don't know what black swan event is going to happen first but I just hope it's at least 3-5 more years off into the future. Not sure if I have that much time but trying to make responsible decisions now to get affairs in order. I don't want to be financially beholden to others. I want that true freedom feeling. Then we can live within our means wherever.
The debt, for us, was the upmost huddle to overcome. We did not have a lot compared to many others, but we had some.
we made good choices and now, our mortgage is the only debt we have, we are down to under 50k on the new house. Hoping that will be gone in three years, that is our goal.
This is happening.
having a small child in the House, we watch (ok, I'm just present in the Room) a fair number of Movies and I'm very surprised at that number of scores from the 60's-70's-80's in Films, especially the Marvel/Disney stuff..."Kid's" from that era are Grandparents now, and somehow I just don't think we're the target audience.

The real thing to prep for is a loss of government maintained order.
In almost any form of disaster, that's the real danger.
It's not hard to prepare to survive for a month at home on your own. Most decent people could do that prep from zero in a weekend.
But, once law and order break down, then things get very interesting.
Supply chains collapse, and new social hierarchies will form. They are likely to be far more arbitrary and brutal than what we have today.
Hunkering down in your homestead and living off your preps is not going to be enough.
The bunker mentality is doomed to failure in any serious societal shift.
