This is my preference when hunting with a handgun.
Lots of options on air guns. I like spring air. Hard to get used to shooting but for SHTF very reliable. 20 ca. Minimum.

On the camo topic, I used to wear it religiously until one year when a deer came right to me without camo. Since then I haven't worn it and have had fine results. As said earlier in this thread, deer have poor eyesight and can easily and quickly detect movement but not colors and are not able to decipher shape patterns. Their ears and nose are, however, very sensitive. Sitting or walking very slowly and quietly, and minimizing your smell are all more productive than camo. That is, at least, my experience.

I've been busted a few times sitting still under a tree even with the wind in my favor. I think in many cases the deer are so used to their environment they know when something is just not right or out of place. I prefer to break up my outline and where I hunt regular woodland camo BDU's work fine. Other places Realtree would probably be better. I don't generally do any stalking through the woods, I'm not very light on my feet at times.
Some deer may just be more inquisitive than others and want a closer look at what they are seeing. I have a tendency of falling asleep with the sun shining on me and literally woke up to a doe nose to nose with me one morning. Her sniffing me woke me up. Waking up all foggy eyed to an animal face to face spooked the bejeasus outta me
She took off running and about that time I realized what happened and laughed my ass off.
90% of my deer hunting is with my Encore handgun, lately ML barrel. I wouldn't hesitate to take one with a 9mm if the right opportunity shown, as soon as I get a clear shot with my .40 P99 I'll take a deer with that too.

What you wear during rifle season should be selected first to prevent other hunters from shooting you, and second to keep you warm so you don't want to fidget around all day, and third not stand out to deer. Blaze orange, or blaze orange with some sort of breakup pattern, both do that. If it's your first time hunting, don't spend $300 on a new jacket, just get a $5 orange vest and put it on over a warm quiet jacket.
With regard to what to shoot, of course you can kill a deer with a 9mm, or a .22, or even an air rifle if you place the round perfectly. But you are not going to achieve the same accuracy in the woods, when you are cold and stiff from not moving for two hours, and your adrenaline is pumping because you are about to pull the trigger for real. So when you consider all that, and you also consider that rifles are also easier to shoot, for your first time, if you go pistol caliber, I would go with a 357 or 44 magnum carbine. That way when the bullet goes two or three inches below where you were aiming, there is still enough damage to cause rapid blood loss and death. But the real answer to what rifle to bring hunting is the rifle you already have in the safe. Everyone has a 30-30, or a 308, or a 30-06 from grandpa lying around.

A larger caliber gives you more options. I had a not so perfect shot at a large buck a few years back. He was standing pretty much broadside, but his vitals were covered by a large maple tree. He knew something was wrong, but didn't know exactly what was wrong. I'm pretty sure he was about to run, so I made the decision to shoot. I shot him in the neck, and he dropped like a rock. I may not have taken that shot with a smaller caliber rifle, but I knew the .308 would do the job.

Some become very good hunters and like the challenge that limiting the equipment the use gives them. They are also patient, know the arena, and limit their shots to their abilities and the parameters of the equipment they use.

That’s exactly why I love hunting deer with a Recurve bow during archery season and a handgun during regular season.
Here’s a mind blower for you @Willjr75. Talking about speed and fps.
I hunt with a 55lb. Recurve bow. At my 27.5” draw length I’m probably getting around 180fps Tops with the arrow that I use. Yet, staying within my known limitations I can and have shot through deer.

I got bored with long guns after a while. Using a handgun brings a bigger challenge to the game. Whether it be waiting for the right shot with my 209X.50 ML handgun or .40 P99, or making sure I have good control and steady breath with a rifle caliber Encore handgun for a long shot. That and it's a whole lot easier creeping through the brush with a handgun.

So why can't I use a 9mm carbine and stay within handgun distances?
It's not too often that people only have a handgun or 9mm carbine and don't have at least a shotgun. A 12 gauge is easily effective out to and past 100 yards.
I hunt with a 44 mag handgun too. I usually bring both with me. Of course it's a challenge.

I'd do it. Maybe use an XTP or something else that has a rep of penetration but also has expansion capability. Either that, or a flat nose bullet.
You got a 5 round mag for that carbine?

I say go for it. Shot placement is what matters most and I'm sure you're very capable of that. I wouldn't hesitate to use a 9mm.
If you haven't already taken a hunter safety course? I would suggest you start looking now as they fill up fast!

These group of guys I'm going with never catch a deer. They go to the Lake Placid area, camp out, and drink. Every year they come back empty handed but got some stories to tell.
