Remington and Sig offer 10mm loads that are properly full house. Then Double Tap and Buffalo Bore go beyond even that.

Yeah but now, it's dying on the vine. In law enforcement the 40 has had its problems with recoil,especially with the increase of smaller statured and female officers. A few years ago I was involved in remedial training for the USBP and the forty gave them problems qualifying where the 9 didn't. Thus the transition to 9mm.
I get what you're saying but it's not always about practicality. It's just fun to have impractical guns and calibers. I'm pretty set on all my practical stuff. I now focus on stuff I really like. No matter how ridiculous. Also, when you reload, EVERY caliber is easy to find.
These things are cyclical, .40 will come back around and 9mm will be derided as the purse gun caliber of choice and a few years after that it'll flop back to 9mm uber alles again.
Yup, I get it. But 90 % of shooters don't reload. That puts them at a disadvantage on many fronts. I would love that Colt 38 Super mentioned above, but I don't reload nor do I have the intention to start. Also I'll bet, based on more than a few hunting stories from a few gun stores I have worked at in the last twenty years plus, that more than a few hunts have been ruined because of the unavailability of the lest than popular calibers. Scopes get banged around and sometimes need to be re-zeroed or bags have been lost enroute and now you're chasing around in remote Colorado, New Mexico, or Alaska looking for that new, super duper cartridge the salesman at Cabela's was raving about, but the only thing available is some 270, 308, or 30-06. And I don't care how flat it shoots, most shots are lest than a couple hundred yards anyhow. So it's a moot point. I applaud the manufacturers trying to spark interest with new products but sometimes the old stuff works just fine. Maybe even better because it's available and not costing an arm and a leg.
Yeah you're probably right (I still owe you a beer from our bet on the PCC9 coming out in 40 firstt over the 45ACP) but I'm sticking to my guns (see what I did there?) about the demise of the 40 . . . Hell, at Frogbones for the two years I was there the 40 range ammo sales were down 60-70% from the previous year.
I do like the 40, especially in competition guns, much less stress on the frame than 9mm Major. However I also like the 38 Super and 356 TS&W And 9x23 Winchester. Just a fan of the odd calibers I guess.
Well sure .40 sales are down, its in the trough now. I however am looking to get into the .40 S&W game and for one very simple reason: everytime a panic comes 9mm goes bye bye but .40 can usually still be found.
At the gun store about 3 miles from the house the only pistol ammo is 357 Sig, 38 super, 32 Federal Magnum and 22TCM. Been that way for weeks.
Place near me says they usually have at least a little. 40 and .357 in stock. They have an M&P 2.0 full size in .40 I wanna get. Once I get the bank account settled up after changing jobs of course.
Plan A: Buy a shitload of 9mm when it's inexpensive. Reload.
