I'm sure this has been answered but I couldn't find it. I'm building a NYS compliant Grendel, I found a source for a faux flash suppressor, Northern Gun Parts, so this is my question: If I purchase a barreled upper with a thread protector and JB Weld the faux suppressor will I be good to go? My thoughts are to apply a thin coat of JB Weld over the threads and screw on the faux suppressor. Would that pass for permanent? Secondly would it have any undesirable effects on harmonics or any other concerns?

I also want to avoid any questions of "assumed intent to assemble" by possessing all the components at once, so if I wait to order the BCG until the lower and upper are complaint in the opinion of members would that suffice? Thanks!

I considered sending it off to have it cut and crowned but then I found a link here to Northern Gun Parts, I bedded my M700 with JB Weld and its held up very well. Thanks for the info Podmonkey!

I wouldn't do it. Bullet Guy doesn't give a fuck and doesn't really read the laws but swears he knows them. He may not give a fuck but his customers shouldn't have to not give a fuck if they are paying him. The ATF specifically says that only two methods are approved for permanence in regards to barrel length and for covering threads.

So if officer friendly wants to pinch you for pinned and welded because the weld can be filed off and the muzzle device can be removed, good luck in court. Similarly, if you have a good enough lawyer, you might get away with bubble gum or superglue.

There's no right answer here. Read the law, try and understand the law, then do what you have to.

Also if they try to say that your barrel is threaded, you can say that it isn't as per the Federales.

Again, because the unsafe law is so vague, either by design or due to the ignorance of its authors, there is a degree of risk in trying to remain compliant while keeping our toys.

You could make the argument that the Safe act references "epoxy" or "silicone" as methods of "permanently" affixing a stock, so why doesn't the same apply with a thread protector so long as the barrel is 16+ inches on its own? But I'm not a lawyer, this is just opinion.

It actually doesn't according to the actual text if the law itself in regards to epoxy. You'll never find it in Penal Law 265.

Like I said before. For barrel length, the Safe Act has nothing to do with anything if you want to attach a fake brake or compensator to make it a legal length. It's federal and they have guidelines on how to do it. SBR's are federally regulated.

Now if you just want to cap threads to make them go away, the safe act has no methods on how to do so but the feds do.

Ask yourself honestly. Which one would more than likely pass muster in a courtroom? Glue or silver solder and welding? At least in a court of law you can reference a federally approved method. With glue you cannot reference anything.

I get why you may be defending it because perhaps you yourself went the easy way but you cannot deny which method has some federal case law or ATF guidelines behind it in regards to covering threads.

And again if it's on a 14.5 inch barrel, it's a federal offense not to have it done as per their methods.

Probably not. Has anyone ever been hauled in for having a barrel that's 15.5 inches? Probably not but you buy or make it 16 inches for a reason. And if you pay someone to do the work for you, as an FFL or Gunsmith, he should know the laws and not half ass the work you are trusting him to do. You wouldn't want him to glue on a 1 inch muzzle device making the overall length of the barrel 15.5 inches now would you?

I would get that fixed asap. It isn't a safe offense. It's federal. And if it's "Meh!" then you might as well SBR it while you are it.

on this is i don't think there allowed any tools or allowed to have a gunsmith remove it in court ..

You're doing it wrong. I've used it to put aluminum engine cases together after crashes, fixed a cracked water jacket on a boat motor, filled drilled and tapped to fix stripped out threads, and pieced back together a ton of stuff around the house with that stuff.

I've had much better luck with 99 cent epoxy from Harbor Freight.
