If the military situation were reversed, would it be acceptable for Ukraine to claim that they were the same country as Russia, and therefore entitled to conquer that territory ?

Ukraine is a part of Russia. It's the same nation, no matter how hard puppet masters in Washington trying to re-invent it. Russ is Russ, Kiev, Novgorod or Moscow. It became one country in the year 862. There were many attempts to divide it. All failed eventually.
