So, all this talk of our military and Russia's...have they gotten better or have we gotten worse or what is going on? Was our military in a better position to fight the Russians around the time of the first gulf war and over time we have just become complacent?

But the bottom line is that MAD is still a thing. Neither military can really be unleashed.
As a strictly military matter, the answer is we can remove all of them from the planet in half an hour.
They can certainly do a lot of damage to us at the same time.
I have no doubt that US political leaders would set ROE from clown world that would give Russia a serious advantage.
I also have no doubt that with competent leadership we would mop the floor with them. I'm not saying we wouldn't get bloody, but even in their backyard we would win if Washington allows it.
I am sure their soldiers are top notch, and they would be able to put more bodies in theater than we would. Especially if we need to keep half of them in the Pacific as a check on China's ambitions over there. But force multipliers are just what they sound like, and we have a lot of them.
Of course, it's never wise to "get involved in a land war in Asia", but we would not be attempting an invasion, so a lot of the pitfalls there might not happen.

They got a whole lot better since 91 and the break up of the Soviet union. Thats not shitting on our forces at all, its just that they stepped up thier game. They learned a lot about Western warfare first hand . They had decades to study the weapons and tactics and decided where they needed to improve . Dont think they didnt notice what happened in the first and second gulf wars . with armys usung thier weapon systems .
Thier doctrine has always called for the overwhelming use of artillery fire. It can shred any elite fighting force.
Do I think the US troops and doctrine are better? Yes I do. but they are a close second in a lot of things. and thier fighting sprit is exceptional .

I'm seeing a lot more siding with Americas enemies these days, in forums like this one. Not outright treasonous language, but a definite tongue-in-cheek, wink-wink, "gonna drill that third hole in this receiver soon" sort of discourse is pervasive in right-wing, pro-gun forums lately.
To clarify, I don't see folks saying they are for Russia and China so much as saying they yearn for the day our country collapses into anarchy. As though it's the first step to something better, and not an invitation to foreign enemies and a balkanized, Syria-esque future for North America.

You need to be reminded we are not at war with Russia. The word ENEMY doesn't apply. I never hear them calling us enemies. Enemies don't smile and shake hands, like Blinken and Lavrov.

As much as I have always had negative waves on Putin, as of late, Putin makes Brandon look like a complete idiot.
Brandon had his chance at turning the country around and he failed miserably. Don't tell me he was put in a bad situation. If he was a sophisticated leader even like someone Putin, things would be a lot different.
