The cop is required to carry the firearm on his person as part of his uniform.
The equivalent you are looking for with a firefighter would be something like his jacket.
The cop wasn't insisting on bringing in the AR he keeps in the trunk.
Regardless, the problem isn't really any of that. The problem is that Kay has an asinine policy, and when one of their managers attempted to actually follow it they threw them under the bus.

The problem is the store has a no gun policy. The cop blatantly ignored it and got in a huff when they asked him to leave.

No, trespassing is only if they ask you to leave and you don't. He left when asked.
He got just what any of us would have gotten. He didn't wave his badge around and demand to be served, which is what you seem to be insinuating he did.
The difference is that when he complained about the BS after the incident the company took him seriously and added an exception to their policy retroactively, then fired the manager for not reading their minds.
Or are you saying that Kay shouldn't be allowed to have a different policy for uniformed LE than the rest of us ?

That’s a dumb analogy. Firefighters don’t carry axes during the vast majority of their career while doing even most FF’er duties. Cops ALWAYS have guns on them.
He shouldn’t have went in uniform though. That’s just dumb regardless except for very minor shopping.

Anyway, did you see my second part? If I was in this guy’s chain of command I’d highly discourage doing anything like this in uniform. I mean I stop at the bank, get snacks, even sometimes grab medicine we need or little groceries for home, but that’s the extent of what I consider appropriate shopping while on-duty.

then a call comes in .. now he is needed .. now what ..
now were into lunch break laws .. in NY .. the Employer must allow them .. and if you take the meal break and then get called to work its a short break
and you get paid for the for the whole time your allowed for lunch ..
maybe all first responder's and EMT's should leave there EDC medical stuff in the car when they shop .. never know .. could go on a wild scissor attack

I got the impression that he had already picked out the ring and was just stopping in to pick it up. That seems like the sort or quick in and out that's reasonable. Plus, they said he was on lunch at the time.

You are falling victim to laws intended to protect you. Unintended consequences.
You have to take the break, because the employer must be able to prove that they offer them.
You can bet that any employer who allowed employees to decline the break would end up getting sued by someone who claimed they were illegally "encouraged" not to take them.
Safest option for the employer is to make you take the break.
