Knife for my dad

Hi guys, i dont know much about knives but i want to get a knife for my dad, its going to be a utility knife sort a thing. he likes to do alot of work in the house, in our neighbors house, and any kind of handyman stuff. i want to get him a small knife for cutting wires, plastics, etc etc.

he uses a really old boxcutter knife for pretty much all that stuff so i want to give him a little upgrade. something very tough and all around small knife.

suggestions?

Go to the Benchmade website, build him a mini grip, you can personalize it with his initials or whatever. For utility work skip the coated blade it will show wear quickly.

I agree with this and will add I really like the mini barrage for a small knife.

For $200 or less you have the cream of the production crop available, for utility I recommend the Spyderco ParaMilitary 3, 3" blade. For Bling (and decent utility) I recommend the Zero Tolerance 450 or 460 also 3" blades. In the Benchmade camp you have the legendary 940 Osbourne @3.4". I recommend the 940-2 version. I have a very slow wireless connection right now, I will post pictures of all these tomorrow. In short though your budget will allow for some very swanky options, of which there is a vast quantity of excellent ones. This will be a fun thread! Blade porn ahoy!!

the spyderco is lookin sexy, as well as the benchmade. i definitely have to get him one with a serrated blade

Two options come to mind here. One is a Leatherman Wave, the other the Benchmade 940. Both will last a lifetime. I own both.

i just found out he just bought a new utility knife. now im leaning towards a leatherman, but i still want to get him something thats more personal, with engraving and such.

Look at Benchmade custom shop, you can put anything you want on the blade.

I'd avoid cutting wires with a nice knife but can't say I haven't done that myself lol. Benchmade and Spyderco make very nice knifes but make sure you look to COO some have been farmed out. I'm sure he'll appreciate whatever you give him. Good luck.

Hoo, boy. I destroyed the edge of my PM2 cutting a wire cable seal, all because I was to lazy to fetch out my wire cutters.

As for the "farmed out" thing- Spyderco does have a Chinese value line, they are decent but overpriced now, and also has models produced in Taichung Taiwan. However the latter is considered to have the highest quality production of any of Spyderco's lines even in comparison to their excellent domestic production in Golden Colorado.

Yeah I know Spyderco now manufactures their highest line in Taiwan. They were formerly made in Colorado. Maybe it's just me but if I'm going to buy a high-end knife for myself (or as a present for my dad) I'd be damn sure it wasn't stamped China or Taiwan, LOL...

I'd definitely lean towards a Leatherman if he's going to be cutting wires. If you can't get things engraved on it right from them, there are companies you can send it out to.

What?

Golden, Colorado is still the HQ and main factory for Spyderco. Seki City Japan is another big one for their VG 10 blades. Almost none are made in China or Tiwan beyond their value line, and even those like the Tenacious are high quality.

You can check out SpyderCo they make excellent knives that won't break the bank. Look for something in an H1 or VG-10 steel, highly resistant to rust.

Anyway, I recommend the PM2 as well. Right price, good size, good steel, add despite the rumours, made in USA if that matters to you.

Plus excellent customer service. I had a grip screw fall out and they sent me a bunch for free.
