Knowing that you can't take it all..

Well after reorganizing and buying new bags for a "One bag for all Ammo/Handguns" kinda set up I just did, it got me pondering on the SHTF scenario. Obviously you can only hold and carry what you're physically able to and still be mobile..the ones that gave larger families have help yes, bjt what about the other dudes out there single or divorced and have to do it on their own? I just completely redid everything into a smart grab n go better than I had prior, which was unrealistic. This is just me, and I'm not gonna try and pretend it all comes..so heres my little paragraph..and chat about yours if you feel, if not pm whatever..there's plenty of threads running about this situation..

Now I'm happy with the way I just re-organized my new "grab n go gun/ammo BOB" lol. Made it fit a realistic amount of ammo for the guns that will come with me in a SHTF scenario. Which really is gonna be just my 12g, m69 22 rifle,1911 and my EDC 9mm. A single man can only carry what can be carried and I'm no dreamer thinking everything under the sun can come with me. It'll be my real BOB prepped with everything from hammock to aspirin and everything inbetween, my new improved Ammo/handguns bag packed to the gills(but still carryable)with strong reinforced shoulder strap, and then both longuns in a single soft case with reinforced shoulder strap so all 3 "bags" can be over a shoulder or carried one way or another. The rest don't make the cut..left for the looters and bastards that arrive long after I'm Bourne Legacy-ing it in the Catskills..

I'm not so sure I'd leave my house. I have shelter and more resources here. I have access to food and water. My family and friends could come here and live so we could stand watch. I have fruit trees and berry bushes. I have an old Victorian so
Lots of room and 2 foot thick basement walls. I also have a 3 RD floor and good sight lines. I have tools, wood, and lots of other supplies. Many rivers near by with lots of resources. What's the downfall I'm missing with staying put other than people possibly knowing I'm here. I figure most people will be dead in less than a month since they won't be able to find food.

That's definitely good, I'd do the same (as long as a few don't come from all sides and burn your ass to the ground) I'm a normal ranch with normal basement so it's a tad different for me. But I'd suspect most will hunker down anyway no matter what keyboard warriors want to say.. I'm talking bout the time that you really might have to leave and get a move on, such as a a nuclear facility leaking or hit or powers out for substantial time and no cooling of the rods..and you're forced to move along, that's when the plan of "what to take" comes into full play. Im 45 minutes East of Indian Point 3(jet stream heading my way) no matter the wind the fallout radius is past North New Paltz, West to PA line,South to NJ line and East to Hartford CT..and that's the bullshit "make you feel good media map" I'm sure it's waaay worse than that. If anyone else here is near a Facility then you need to think of that, cause if the grids hit or powers out for some other reason for long, those back up batteries won't hold off those fuel rods for to long..not many people put that ine in their play book, they assume a terrorist strike or something, but all it takes is a blackout and time..

As for taking it all with me, If I have both vehicles and a trailer, sure, no issues at all. If I am on foot, I will have to rearrange and rethink. We are working more things into our plans.

Cars, trucks..meh! Motorcycle maybe..but if you need to get out of the way of leaking nuclear, solar storm or grid issues..cars will be splattered all in every direction out of gas or car computers whacked out from EMP, you're only getting so far in a real size vehicle, let alone needing to go anywhere, like any direction into forests over rivers and whatnot if it was fallout..
The assumption of the thread, is being on foot..Thus the what you can carry set up, sure I'd stay put or pack my car like I'm going on a SHTF vacation, but that's dreamy I fear..

On a plant trip with a concurrent loss of off site power the Reactor Coolant System will cool the core in natural circulation and the decay heat would be removed by equipment serviced by emergency power supplies with significant fuel supplies immediately available. If you have to leave your home for a black out scenario it would be for food, heat, or security,

Yep, you are more than likely correct. On foot, not sure what I am going to do. I have a few ideas, but with the family in tow, things become very hard to figure out. I can't imagine how you can say I'm misinformed, I respectfully reverse the misinformed back to you and raise you a "false hope misinformation" because there's no way whatsoever that a long and steady power (and I did say substantial time) outage will "naturally cool" the power rods. Eventually they will decay. Back up systems will only last so long, I didn't mention how long, obviously not immediately but after back ups and the people controlling them have long left the area to be with their own families, shit will break down. For the people that are going to "hunker down" with plenty of rations, that will become an issue. The thread is for what to take with you..which assumes leaving the home.

As I stated on another thread, I went hiking with my BOB. It contained 3 MRE's, sleeping mat, sleeping bag, poncho, 4 liters of water, first aid kit, knife, survival straws, change of clothes, crude fishing gear, canteen cup, micro shovel, fire starting equipment, compass, hand cracked flashlight radio, portable Ham radio, 550 cord, 100 mile and hour tape, and various other luxury items.

Needless to say, I couldn't hike the hills very far or with any speed for that matter. I didn't have my carbine and hundred rounds of ammo either. When I got home, a small tent came out, the sleeping mat got cut in half, non essential toiletries were scrapped, books, and other shit I really didn't need to survive.

I think you will be better served with one long gun and one pistol.

At home the pack felt good. Not so half a mile in the woods.

If on your own or with someone else, you have to be mobile and avoid engagements.

My plan is to make it to the State park near me and hunker down for a week or two until things die down. I don't plan on getting into engagements and will more or less take the role of a downed pilot and evade and observe until it's safe to move back.

That there, I completely agree with. But this assumption is worse case, leaving for good. Once you get to a place to camp or set up, the 12g becomes your protection, the 22 becomes the longer range food hunter, the pistol on the belt and the other maybe hidden under a bush near my camp. Just getting to the destination is the bitch of it all with the weight, the main reason I reorganized for ease and then started the thread to hear others..

I do agree though, I will not be looking for a fight. I have stuff stored down at my land. Not much, but if I have to hoof it there, it will be nice to see the stash. As for carrying all that I need, I am getting older each day. When one starts adding up all the little things, weight is added very quickly.

I do agree. A colony will be more helpful then being a lone wolf in the longer run. Harriman Park would be 30 minute car ride..so for me more like a day's journey hiking gingerly in and out of hiding to not be ass raped and taken of all my supplies.. I was thinking Bear Mtn or more towards Catskills if it was like "end o days" bad..other then that, the smaller hidden gems of state land in your own county's may be even better..less people thinking small, many will think of the big names they've hiked before or just out of short notice necessity..

There are potential disaster scenarios where you may have to take off but Indian Point would not drive a bug out scenario for you. I doubt you would enjoy arguing this point with me. I am a recognized subject matter expert, have provided judicary testimony on this topic, and can do the math. If by chance you lived through a hypothetical disaster that would cause multiple critical safety functions to go red at the facility, radiation would not be near the top of your list of concerns for immediate or short term survival. On a loss of power event the facility has to be able to be self sufficient for a month as a condition for its license. There is also not enough material in the core nor any historical meteorological conditions to cause the life endangering widespread radiological destruction you described . There can be a hypothetical mess and a financial disaster but there are much worse PRA concerns to prepare for. Without even knowing windspeeds, wind direction or wind stability class in your case if bugging out just have to head north and if you are going to cross the Hudson, go past Putnam County if you have a choice. Can not go wrong.
