Of course the article lacks details, but it says it only runs for two hours on battery power. I’ve never seen a fire truck at a fire scene for less than two hours. They paid 1.2 million for it and I would assume that’s a heavy premium for it. Not worth it IMO.

So I am not defending this piece of shit engine (that’s also fugly) but if they are going on ems runs, fire alarms, smells and bells calls with this electric engine it will likely have enough battery power to go on those calls. Even many fires in big career departments are picking up companies in an hour or so. My biggest bitch about the thing is a bunch of politicians spent 7-800,000 more of the taxpayers dollars on this electric engine vs a traditional diesel powered engine so they could say look how great we are. That money would have been better spent on multiple diesel powered engines or more staffing or training. I don’t care for politicians using tax payer dollars to fund their eco nazi dick swinging contest.

Agreed. However it seems like it’s to fight fires since it has a 5” and 2” hose and pumping system. I agree if it was for quick EMS calls, but it’s not. How fast do you think that 5” pump will drain the battery? I know it has a backup, but I agree and my point was this is for show at tax payers expense.

A pump capable of feeding a 5” line likely takes several hundred hp to drive. Personally, I’d be surprised if it could keep up for an hour at full flow. While I’m sure there are use cases for EV’s in the fire service, this one isn’t it.

That’s my point. I can’t imagine how much that takes and would drain that battery in a heartbeat. Oh well. I’m sure NYS won’t be far behind.

My area it takes 15-20 minutes to get the fire department going before they are hosing down a fire.

Back when there were more volunteer fire departments, the response time was ~10 minutes or less. A LOT can happen in an additional 10 minutes with lives and structures as I recently experienced with my neighbor's house.

Talk about taking two steps backwards.

Fire apparatus are running constantly from the time they leave the station to the time they get back. They never get turned off. My guess is that 'extender' will run the same way.

CA should just pass a law requiring a minimum of (1) Emergency Service Receptacle, 240v/400amp, for each residential dwelling unit, or 480v/600amp for each 5,000 square feet of commercial space.

Now your electric firetruck is totally feasible.

Why not just pass a law banning fire. It worked for drugs, right?

You have to provide power for your neighbor's emergency service. They will happily (mandated) do the same for you.

It would be great to see the electric firetruck pull up to a large structure fire, and all the FF's jump out and start rolling out the hoses extension cords.
