Lets talk Red Dots on handguns

me personally i just cant get past Trijicon, yes there are a few others i would recommend with a caveat. and yes there are a lot of improvements coming out. (hell the trijicon RMR isnt even designed to be used on a pistol)

here is one i have been semi hesitant to look at for myself but also have seen a lot of people moving to (again my main goal is durability and battery life).

Aaron's opinion is pretty high on the list of "yea ill take what he is saying as legit" i wont go as far as to say he is unbiased but i still would consider him fair

so looks like the Vortex Viper is a more good to go vs a nope not worth getting

Sounds like its worth a look for, Range fun, competition, even fair daily carry use, but may just miss a duty LEO Military nod

I'm running one on mine, no problems so far. With that said I'm planning on a build with an RMR and one with the shield. With that said I only have around 500 through mine so it hasn't had enough time to say good or bad.

its funny as of now in order i am a fan of RMR, Viper, DPP, shield,

i just know you have been running the Vortex here recently

I had big expectations about sending a lot of lead down range this summer on mine, it just hasn't panned out. I don't know much about the DDP but the other 3 from what I found work as advertised. Can you get a lemon .... yup but these companies have a reputation for making them right. Also I don't think I will ever run without back up iron sites. I also wouldn't hesitate to use any of them for duty/combat. I also think there's a learning curve to using them. For me I think it was a larger curve than I originally expected.

Like I said I dont know much about that one. I know vortex and trijicon are know for good customer service. I have heard shield is good on CS but they are over seas so if anything goes bad it will take time in shipping.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone who doesn't work for SIG* have anything nice to say about the Romeo.

Cant go wrong with an RMR. Rugged, reliable but just expensive.

The vortex venom you can. The problem with this sight is the foot print is so large most of the time you lose the ability to run backup irons. What I've read about changing the batteries is the sight usually retains the zero even after. Even if it didn't zeroing mine was less than a mag and 15 minutes.

My friend and I have DPPs on our CZ USPSA guns and they have been trouble free. Several people we shoot with also happy with them. But I have heard of lemons. I've also heard Leupold service and guarantee are great, so surprising to me reading the earlier post about slow service.

I have a Sig Sauer Romeo5 on a rifle; I haven't shot it very much but seems decent.

I also have a Vortex Venom on a S&W Victory .22 cal pistol.. it is very fun to shoot, but as lots of people say, you need to practice a LOT - you tend to 'hunt the dot' for a while until you get the hang of it.

In the past I had eyeballed a SIG P320 Rx but now I'm not as interested in the SIG.. Now I'm kind of itching to get a Hudson H9 and put a Delta Point Pro on it ala Karl @ InRangeTV...

I have a Burris FastFire 3 on my S.A.M. 1911 .45.
I have noticed it does "slow down" the slide when you fire. Before the red dot the gun could handle light loads just fine. After, it keeps stovepiping.
The mount I'm using is the dovetail mount that replaces the rear sight. It requires that the sight be shimmed in the rear to be able to adjust the dot to point-of-impact. Otherwise it sights high (about 6 inches at 30 feet).
I am now looking to remove it and replace it with fully adjustable fiber sights, if I can find any that say they will fit the S.A.M. 1911.

thanks for the insight and for starting this thread at the perfect time. Im weighing pros and cons of my next pistol which will have an RDS on it. Orignially my idea was acquire a used G19 in good shape, have the slide milled add suppressor sights and an RMR and go. Then I found the Sig 320 Rx which is more ergonomical but the sight felt cheaper and I had doubts about its durability. Now the 5th gen G19 offers a model with the slide cut from the factory for a RDS (G19 MOS). I think that option might be the way I go seeing as its gonna be within the same ballpark, cost wise, as if I purchased a used Glock built it up from there, but the platform would be brand new as opposed to someones trade in.
