The City of Fulton Police Department states that Hanks is on paid administrative leave, pending the completion of an internal investigation.

That's bullshit. Should be suspended without pay because of his bac. I understand he wasn't on duty but he's supposed to uphold the law - not break it. Once convicted he should be fired

Maybe they can find a good deal on a 2 seat mountain bike,…with snow tires!

Down in NC, I was always seeing these little electric “mini sized” motorcycles or scooters being ridden by guys loaded down with big ass backpacks and other shit. I was told they are “DUI scooters”. Apparently down here when they take your license away for DUI, they allow people to drive them so they can still get to work and the grocery store, etc. And you see them on roads of all different speeds,- although they supposedly don’t go above 35MPH.

I’ve seen guys riding them in heavy traffic on 60MPH roads,- they look like they are going to get killed. It is funny as hell to see them zipping along on those tiny ass things while trying to hold onto their groceries!

.22 is high enough that you are at risk of alcohol poisoning.

You're not just drunk, you could be in medical trouble.

The mere fact that this Superior Citizen could function well enough to even operate a vehicle (admittedly, it was very poorly operated,) indicates long-term alcohol abuse and an extreme tolerance. He’s an alcoholic. A hard core alcoholic. There’s no excuse, there’s no defense.

Every cop civil service test I've seen says a valid driver's license is a condition of employment.

My job has a similar requirement. If I were to loose my license, I'd be fired even if I could afford to pay someone to chauffer me around.

I know several people who worked for highway departments who lost their jobs because they got DWIs for the same reason.

I never said his life should be destroyed. I don't agree with the paid suspension. It should be unpaid. I seriously doubt that anyone in another line of work that requires driving would be paid if they were suspended for drunk driving. Other than him driving drunk I have nothing against this guy. I just want fairness in the system. He'll have his day in court(hopefully they don't try to cover this up) and get to plead his case. NY doesn't punish DWIs as long as you can pay a huge fine. I know quite a few guys that have a DWI and paid out the ass to stay out of jail. If they do take his license then in fairness he should lose his job.

Felony conviction = loss of nearly all rights.

That is the loophole for that, a jury of your peers decides you're guilty and all your rights go away. The only thing you have left is that it can't be cruel and unusual.

After a felony conviction they can lock you in a box for years and control every aspect of your life, free speech and RKBA are secondary to that.

I tended bar for over 30 years and I have seen lots of cops get drunk and drive. I know of several who were involved in accidents and 2 that were drunk while on the job. With just one exception I have never seen or heard of cops arresting another officer for drunk driving. That one exception involved a deputy sheriff sergeant who had gotten drunk on the job and had a serious accident. There was no way they could cover it up.

In general I agree. You don't let them out if you can't trust them.

But, the other side of that is if they aren't an actual danger, but still need punishment to discourage them or others from committing the same crime.

Keeping them locked in the box is very expensive, and if they can be punished in a way that doesn't also punish the taxpayers, that's not a bad thing.

You can't just use fines either. Many people simply don't have the means pay enough of a fine to be a reasonable punishment.

So "we'll let you out of the box early, but no alcohol for a year or you're going back in to finish the sentence" doesn't seem unreasonable.

I know of many cops who have driven drunk. I have known many who have gotten away with it and many who haven’t ( arrested).
One reason why many cops won’t arrest a cop for drunk driving is exactly what some here are calling for— a loss of almost everything with very little opportunity for redemption if caught.
Alcoholism is common hazard of the job just as it is for military members. And active military members and often even recently separated members get the same breaks a cop would when it comes to DWI

Would the cops who will look the other way for a fellow cop do the same for a CDL driver ?

His life would be just as ruined by the conviction.

As would many other professionals.

Who should only other cops get that pass ?


Also, looking the other way for a DWI by a fellow cop really shoots holes in the whole "we can't overlook AW possession bullshit".
