Local radio station poll - Too hard to get a permit in NY ?

This is on the website of one of the most popular radio stations in my parts.

Is It Too Difficult to Get a Hand Gun in New York State?

Its 5 days old already and only has a total of 101 votes right now at 91.09% Yes , so it really probably doesn't matter. If it gets enough attention though, maybe it gets mentioned on the station or something, who knows.

So, you know what to do.

Very strange statement as I have 2 out of state pistol permits and I am not required to give them up.

Lets see.... if you move into NYS and get a drivers license you have to give up your other out of state license.

In some states you can keep your NYS drivers license and also have drivers license in the state you are visiting which is only valid in that state.

I voted yes
Even though in my county its not hard, it just takes time. You do not have to give a reason. If you meet the requirements, you get an unrestricted permit.

I think difficulty implies more than the process and wait though. I don't know about your county, but most NY counties are among the most expensive permit processes in the country. Many counties also require taking a course as well, which can be both part of the large expense and a daunting amount of time and effort. I've personally known quite a few people to whom the monetary expenditure required kept them from getting a permit. I'd consider that part of the "difficulty'.

Anyway , you all have more than doubled the amount of total votes on the page since I posted this just a few hours ago. That's fantastic. Being able to fight for our rights as a group, in any and every little way we can, is so much a big part of why we have this forum.

Its difficult to get unrestricted in Onondaga..but fairly easy and time consuming.

When I got mine in 2012 it took only a couple months. Glad I got it when I did...

There is one thing that I'm having trouble adjusting to. New York has some of the most strict gun laws in the country and I come from one of the most laxed states.

In Michigan I had a concealed carry pistol permit. I had to take a written test along with a twelve hour course taught by the police department. After I passed the course I then had to have my finger prints taken by the state police and have my record examined by a board. Once I got that approval, a psychiatrist then had to interview me and go over any prescription medication. Despite all of that the process was only about three months.

That's considered lax? Holy crap. For some reason I thought Michigan was a permitless state. Who can keep up anymore..
