Anyone here know anyone, preferably "close" to the 12550, that can drill and tap a bolt carrier? I'm looking to make my SCR a side charger.

Yes. But I want to do that with the SCR. The bolt carrier is what needs to be drilled and tapped for the handle and since the SCR bolt carrier is proprietary, that's what I need drilled.

I've been doing some research. While I'm always game to try, it seems like some of the BCGs are a PITA to drill and tap.

Yes. From my understanding, the carrier is hardened. Not being a metalurgist and not knowing the proper tools and methods, I figured someone here might know.

It is probably good idea to find out what the hardness is. Generally, if it is below Rc 38 on the Rockwell "C" scale it is machinable with high speed steel cutting tools. It will be tough but doable if your set-up is good and rigid and your tools sharp. The lower the number the easier it is to machine.
Looking at the BCA carrier ad Kev74 posted I see it is made from 8620 steel. 8620 is a "low carbon" alloy steel and is generally case hardened giving it a very hard skin and a softer core. You might be able to cut through the skin with a carbide drill or end mill. A rigid set-up is mandatory...

A guy at work drilled and tapped his BCG and his was case hardened. once thru the case, it drilled and tapped just fine. I think he used a carbide drill and did it with the mill not a drill press. I have a side charge upper, ive thought about using it on my Ares but its on a dedicated lower now, so no need anymore.
