Looking for a gunsmith in wny, preferably Erie county to cut and crown and refinish a rifle barrel from 20” to 18” so that it will be featureless.
I bought one from him and it’s very nice. He’s in the Rochester area. Great guy to deal with.I believe @Runner99 worked on crowning rifle barrels or at least his own.
I know the kid is now running the gun locker but the old man is not someone I would want to deal with. Prices on transfers and ammo were crazy. I talked to him about getting an AR lower and he told me it was cheaper for him to build it for me and wanted a grand without the stock or upper and this was 10 years ago. I did my entire rifle for $750. Also keep in mind the kid is a cop so watch what you say while there.Try Blue Tuna Gunsmithing in Kenmore or The gun locker in Tonawanda.
I’ve only dealt with a gentleman named Larry at The Gun Locker. He did some work on a handgun for me and I have no complaints. Everything worked out fine.I know the kid is now running the gun locker but the old man is not someone I would want to deal with. Prices on transfers and ammo were crazy. He screwed my dad big time on a UTV/SXS on the motor cycle side of the shop. He screwed him more than once on the same machine and said he did work that he never did and could fix it but couldn’t. Time, money, and aggravation is all it was. I won’t step foot in there again.
Also tried to screw a friend out of some estate guns on pricing. Maybe other FFLs would have been in the same ballpark but man the prices were rock bottom for the guns and conditions the hubs were in.
Appreciate the shoutout.I believe @Runner99 worked on crowning rifle barrels or at least his own.
If I can’t find what I’m looking for locally then I’ll be contacting you. I’m waiting on a response from a local shop to see if they are able to cut, crown and refinish an AR barrel.Appreciate the shoutout.
Sounds like a pretty simple task.
I’m in the Syracuse area, but would be happy to help if you don’t find someone more local
Your statements are kind of off the mark with this thread. I'll respond to two of your statements though.I know the kid is now running the gun locker but the old man is not someone I would want to deal with. Prices on transfers and ammo were crazy. Statements aren’t off the mark. A shop was recommended and I know of some bad experiences with the shop so I said I’d avoid them and provided details on why.Your statements are kind of off the mark with this thread. I'll respond to two of your statements though.
1."Prices on transfers and ammo were crazy."
you buy ammo online giving the profit to the seller and expect a gun shop to receive it, store it and comply with state law for nothing. Time is what you are paying for and get nothing for the time spent doing a background check and then following up if you get delayed. Simply put a local FFL is not the post office.
2."Also tried to screw a friend out of some estate guns on pricing."
No gun shop as far as I know will give you top dollar for a gun being as they have to come up front with the cash and then sit on these guns for weeks, months and even years just to recoup their non-investment. There are two things you can do if you feel you are being "screwed", take them home and sell them yourself or have the gun shop put them on consignment for you where you can set the price and pay a fee for them selling them for you. Most shops will do that, but they are not going to make your problem their problem as there is a ton of paperwork to be done. As I said time is money. Also, I know of at least one owner who ended up in court because the family couldn't get along. what did he get out of it, loss of income, time and a whole lot of aggravation.
I've helped with estate deals and my first question is always what do you want to get out of them. If they don't know or ask what they can get, the answer is always what it makes it worth it to my FFL. Noone forcing anybody to do anything. As I said, something can be worked out even if it means they have to wait to get what they want.Statements aren’t off the mark. The transfer price I was referring to was not for ammo and was for guns ordered on line. The ammo prices he had in store were nuts and almost double what other stores were selling for. They wanted $65 a few years back when I was looking to transfer a pistol or long gun. Going price around here for that is $25-$40 today. I have a guy that still does them for $25 and then $20 for each him after.
I never said I expected my friend to get top dollar. I even said I didn’t know and another shop might have offered similar. If I remember correctly she was offered around $200 or less per gun that sells for around $600-$750. She don’t know what she had and he tried to take advantage of her. I get they might sit around for a while but all FFL’s know what sells quickly and what doesn’t. I’d rather have them say they don’t sell fast so my offer will be low and you can decided.
I simply stated they aren’t a shop I’d want to deal with and provided reasons for it. Should I not say anything next time and have the OP have a bad experience potentially? The other two shops I referred him to have many positive reviews from people I know.
