m&P 15 Sport upgrade

Oh boy, so I am acquiring an m&p 15 Sport. Anyone upgraded one? Experiences? I am not a fan of the front sight gas block and will eventually change that, swap the hand guard for a free float and putting a low profile block or just chopping the oem block down to fit. Will swap the stock and pistola grip also for something that I feel looks and feels better. Not sure if I want to put a scope or red dot and buis yet. Anyway, anyone have one they'd like to share pictures of and input?

It might be both more economical and satisfactory to keep your Sport as is and start from scratch on a new build. Reason being is once you catch the upgrade bug you may well find yourself replacing near every component anyway. The crazy/cool thing about ARs is the receiver is not the most expensive component, or not by much anyway.

I second keep it stock.

Then go snag up a new lower (blemished Aero for like 80 doll hairs or even get a poverty pony for like 40-60 monies)

Then over time adding parts and do a custom build

I had a Sport when they first came out and had the 5r rifling 1/8 twist bbl. I put another upper on the M&P lower and sold it recently. I kept the upper and bbl though.

I am currently thinking about free floating the M&P upper now as well. The bbl is an awesome bbl and I don't know why S&W went back to a 1/9.

When I bought mine it had no forward assist or dust cover so, like many, I put a receiver with a foward assist and dustcover on it, swapped out the hand guards for MI rail hand guard in OD green.

I think anyway you decide to go, you will have spare parts and end up building another rifle.

Those early Sports were a great buy. Too bad they de-spec'd em a bit.

The barrel was the whole reason I bought the Sport so no way I'm letting that go. I hesitated selling the lower, but it's funding the Ruger pc carbine so worth it.

Not really an AR guy, I built 1 pistol previously and while I like the gun I just am not a huge shooter of them. This one was donated to me by my brother so no cost to start.

It is not just like "any AR". They have two models. They have a civilian spec model and a mil spec model. You have to be careful with what parts you are getting before you get the. On the civilian spec I know the buffer tube is a little larger in diameter. The lower is milled a little different as well. The uppers are pretty much the same save for not having the dust cover and the forward assist(kind of useless anyway). I had one. Was my first AR style before I really knew about them.

I upgraded by selling it and buying parts and building my own rifle.

I got this while still under the communist control of NYistan. Changed out the commercial buffer tube (thicker than mil spec) and fixed stock to adjustable. Also free floated the barrel and put on a foxtrot mike handguard. NiB BCG, magpul grip, primary arms riser and red dot, olight light mount with maglite XL200. Lastly a griffin armament taper mount flash hider for shush tubes. Like some have said the barrel on the 1st gen sports are fantastic. Can't speak for gen 2 as I've never shot one. Also no assist but not needed anyway.

Replaced. You can always use spare parts. No sense cutting a perfectly good front sight.

do you happen to remember what one you used? It should use a carbine length correct?

I used one of these Luth-AR Lo-Profile Gas Block - .750" GB-LP750. But I just went for the cheapest one I could find. If it's a dedicated one there shouldn't be much difference. Adjustable is a different story. And yes it is a carbine length gas system.

I would cut it down. A pinned gas block is far superior to a set screw gas block.
