M1A thoughts?

So as some of you know, I have a stable of .223 rifles.

I have had a gaggle of 7.62x39mm rifles.


I've never had. A 308 semi auto.

I don't really enjoy the thought of a thordsen stocked ar10. I have a friend with one, and it balances about as well as a democratic lead government's budget.

So any of you have an m1a? I was looking at an 18" model to split the barrel length difference.

You can easily get a NY compliant one..

Probably your best compliant option for the caliber. You could try to track down a Saiga or Veper in .308 but finding the specific models that are compliant may be problematic as many of the 308s used thumb hole stocks.
If you have the money and the patience you could hit up Gunbroker For an HK SL7. The SL7 is kind of like a sporterized G3, completely featureless. They aren't cheap but they are still in the realm of current semi auto 308 prices.

Had to edit for the correct nomenclature.
It is the SL7, not SL8. The SL7 is the 308 version and the SL6 is the 223 version. The SL8 was the bizarre import friendly version of the G36.

Marty said a stupid thing and walked it back. Stupid yes, but not nearly the same as what Springfield Armory and Rock River Arms did.
Still a big fan of the Daniel Defense rifles.

So more companies than just Springfield makes them. They can be made into tack drivers and they can be made in any barrel length from 16-22 inches. And just about any caliber based upon the 308 case.

I have a couple M14 type rifles, one has been rebarreled in 6.5 Creedmoor and set in a JAE 100 G3 stock, the other is getting ready to be put in a J Wolfe modified fiberglass stock.

Warning they are B.O.A.T.s though. Break out another thousand. They tend to get really spendy real quick. My LRB has about 6K into it now (with scope). My Springfield will most likely hit 4K by the time I am done with it.

Both of them shoot great the Springfield likes SMK 168 grain bullets. If you have never used one or anything of similar design you are in for a real treat as far as shooting and maintaining them. They are not the run of the mill Rifle. The guys over at the M14 forum are very helpful. Tony Ben and a couple of the other older guys there can make the M14 do amazing things.

I had a BAR. I never really could quite like it for some reason so it went to my father in law. I think it was the ergos, just never felt right on my shoulder. Definitely was a very well made rifle, ymmv.

Springfield makes pretty decent firearms, their political activities aside. Also, I think they've attempted to make amends for their past transgressions.

Springfield's M1a1 is one of the better offerings out there IMO...if you are into M1a1's. The design is long in the tooth, and even the well-made ones aren't going to be as refined as some of the newer .308 semi-auto's (FN Scar, HK MR762).

Not trying to derail another thread. But no they didnt do shit about their "past transgressions" all they did was put out a bull shit fake apology that isnt even an apology saying they had no idea what the lobbying group was even doing (and yet the lobbying group only represented 2 companies, Springfield and Rock River, oh and the lobbying group was started and run by..... Springfield and Rock River) and then after that they "left" that lobbying group

And all this was because they got backlash, if gun owners didnt speak up they wouldnt have done shit and continued to support anti 2a Legislation that shit all over the rights of Illinois residents, why? Because they spent money to get themselves an exemption from the bill

After some further thought and research this weekend, I decided that one of these isn't for me. I appreciate everyone chiming in.


For $1,500 I can buy a lot of ammo and practice. When I really dug into the function and accuracy, I wasn't impressed with the cost/benefit ratio.

I'm currently watching the movie "Daylight's End" ( fast runner zombie movie) and the "hero" is using a Socom 16 with shorty suppressor , scout style optic and Magpul magazine pulls.
He's a badass with that rifle. You should get one.

I have a lever action .30-30 with a William's peep sights that I can hit a 3" steel target 6 out 6 times off hand at 110 yards consistently....is that good enough for "zombies"?

In all seriousness I think they are sexy as hell. I just don't want to really spend a decent down payment on a car , $2k to $3k from some makers, to get inferior performance to a $1,000 ar-10.
