M4 Feedramps or not?

OK, need some advice from people who have more experience than me on builds. I have a barrel that is NOT cut for M4 feedramps. The feedramps are cut right up to the edge but not into it. In looking around at uppers, I am finding most of them are cut with M4 ramps. My question is whether or not it is that big a deal for a generic first build? I can search around for a NON M4 ramp upper or see what a smith would ask for cutting the feed ramps into the barrel. Let's pretend I do not have a lot of money to spend on things. (Well it is not really pretend......) Appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.

I'm pretty sure if you don't have M4 feed ramps your gun wont be milspec or tacticool

Not critical for a semi auto. Originally M4 feed ramps, along with heavier buffers, were a fix to correct missfeeding due to the altered timing of the M4 relative to the M16 as a result of the shortend gas system. Either one of the two fixes woukd have solved the propblem but bothe were adopted. M4 feed ramps fall into the "nice but not necassary" category.

7.62x39 side note: M4 Feed-ramps upper on a 7.63x39 barrel will cause tons of feeding issues. You would need to take a Colt route and contour the feed ramp into something looks like a 1911 feed-ramp...

That’s what I’ve done on my 7.62x39’s. It’s pretty easy with a dremel. Makes a huge difference.

I always had issues with HP’s prior to doing it. Never understood the x39 HP’s but they were cheap so I have a lot.

It's getting harder and harder to find flat-top upper receivers without feeding ramps. I picked up a few just in case I get a barrel with AR15 barrel extension. Eventually everything will be M4 configuration.
