.40 S&W
So, last weekend I read through a forum thread Changing Caliber? to determine if I needed to register a new caliber for my pistol. I bought a .357 SIG barrel during a Labor Day sale at Brownells. It is labelled for the P320C but it fits perfectly in my P250C.
After reading here that new calibers must be register and on the pistol permit I headed to the Permit Office at the Madison County Sheriff's Office this week with the receipt from Brownell. The pistol permit office is at the Madison County Sheriff's Office in Wampsville, which is opened Monday through Friday, 8AM to 4PM closed from 12noon to 1PM for lunch.
The first time I went on Tuesday was just before noon. I had finished up my morning schedule early so I could make it there. When I arrived I was informed through the intercom at the door that the clerk had left early for lunch. Fine, I knew I had been cutting it close.
So, I go there the next morning at 8:20AM. I present the clerk with the receipt and tell her I am there to have the new caliber to added to my permit.
"Did you buy this online? Oh, no. You can't do that. You have to take it a FFL and bring in the paperwork," she scolded.
"But I've read that other counties allow people to bring in the receipt for the amendment. Why can't I do that here?" I asked.
"That's just not how we do it here."
Grumbling, I stop by a LGS on the way home from work. After showing them the receipt, he shakes his head and says that he needs me to bring in the gun with the original .40 cal barrel in it and the .357 SIG barrel as well. Then he will swap the new barrel into the gun, run a background check for his usual fee, and then give me the receipt to take to PP office who will then add the new caliber to the permit with a ticket to pick up the gun.
As I did not have the pistol that evening, I once again returned to the LGS this Friday afternoon. After paying my fee and receiving the paperwork I went yeet again to the PP Office at 3PM. Well, this time the intercom informed me that the clerk had left at 2PM for the day.
So, now I have to wait until Monday for the permit office to re-open to have it added to my permit and get my stinking ticket to exchange for my gun. But the LGS which is holding my gun is closed on Sundays and Mondays. So my gun is held hostage until Tuesday at the earliest. All because I was trying to follow the rules.
