When they demanded cash, the resident complied. At least, that’s what he wanted them to believe. He said that he was going for what they wanted and reached under the couch.
Instead of pulling out money, he instead pulled out his AK-47 and began shooting at the suspects.

Assault rifle 15s and Assault Killer 47s are both good for self defense. With the Assault Killer you get 32 more bullets in the clip though.

The defender pursued the invaders into the front yard. The pile of brass in the front yard has been described as being from several different guns
The defender continued the gunfight with three occupants of the car that delivered the two home invaders. The group fled the scene in the car.
The car crashed a couple of blocks away. One suspect was found in the car, dead. One wounded suspect was found at Capitol and 71st Street, he was the suspect that died at the hospital. The third suspect from the car was wounded, fled the scene, and was being treated in the hospital.

It appears that the victim was better trained than the criminals.
It is, however, fortunate for the victim that none of the animals managed to score any lucky shots against him.

Im surprised that they say “no charges”. I assumed that as soon as he pursued them outside and continued to shoot, he was cooked - legally speaking. I’m glad Texas is givbing him the benefit of the doubt. Now, let’s see who tried to file a civil suit against him, supported by some anti2a group.
Texas allows a wider latitude in the application of deadly force than most, perhaps any, other state(s). I once read about a robbery attempt in Texas in which the neighbor intervened, caused the would be robbers to flee and then shot the both of them in the back, wounding but not killing them. No charges against the neighbor were filed.

Personally I would never go that far. Entirely for my own legal well being. I have no regards whatsoever for the lives of felons.

Keep in mind, once an attack starts, the victim has no idea what the criminals are planning. When the criminals "run away" under fire, they could simply be trying to reach their compatriots and additional firearms in their car outside. They could be planning to regroup and then resume their assault. It is therefore reasonable for the victim to press his advantage, if he can get one, and seek to stop the threat and avoid further harm to himself, his family, or his neighborhood.
2. A person may not use deadly physical force upon another person
under circumstances specified in subdivision one unless:
(a) The actor reasonably believes that such other person is using or
about to use deadly physical force. Even in such case, however, the
actor may not use deadly physical force if he or she knows that with
