I've been driving in blizzards for 30 years. Never once had a problem.
I've even gone out in blizzards to help others. something the police and military apparently decided not to do this year.
in many cases people have no choice but to go out in blizzards. Not all businesses shut down, not all have the ability to have fully stocked larders.

How is it being enforced? By what mechanism? People can do as they please and commit crimes and there are little to no consequences so what teeth do they police have to enforce a driving ban? It's laughable. We all know and see that nothing happens to violent criminals so I wouldn't be too worried about a ticket for driving. The genie is out of the bottle. If I were there and someone gave me a ticket id throw it out the window and carry on.

People should always have the choice to do what they want, it's called freedom. They should be allowed to call emergency services any time they please, they pay for it. If you give me the option not to pay for it, then I would agree with you. The ones that don't belong in the gene pool. Yes, lots of Darwin awards, not going to sugar coat it, we need this. There are too many warning labels. People no longer think critically, its time people started remembering/learning.

Honestly, a lot of the issues from this "blizzard" were caused by the government. They fired a lot of people for not being vax, so now they lack the staff needed for such an event.

Also why is the National Guard being used to police people. Normally they are called in to clean up and remove snow. Looks like the government was more worried about their authority than people's lives.

I didn’t know there was still a blizzard going on and thought that ended Saturday evening? There’s no blizzard right now and the only failures are there’s and not getting the streets plowed. It started snowing Friday and is now Wednesday and they are aiming at opening up tomorrow so 5-6 days to clear the streets again with 40” of snow. That’s not ok and not acceptable.
My point is instead of doing this the services should be put towards helping people, the city, and clearing the streets. Clearly tickets don’t work as many are traveling about the city.
I’m fine with your solution as well but it’s sunny, no snow, and zero wind right now in Buffalo NY. I walked out to get the mail and I told my wife it’s gorgeous we should go for a walk so your comment isn’t relevant.

You sir are correct. They stopped plowing and caused this. Yes they fired many and failed to pay adequately for the time. There are still signs of them looking for plow drivers for the DOT.
They failed to have enough guardsmen here to clear the streets quickly enough forcing people to violate their rules. They warned us about the storm but failed to act on their own.

Streets are a lot easier to plow when they're not littered with stuck vehicles. So the quicker everyone stays out the way the quicker the crews can work. Not everything is a government pound your chest show of authority.

I heard a while back and haven’t been able to confirm that a number of local courts no longer issue warrants if you fail to show up to court for a traffic ticket. They may send you reminders in the mail but there is no real enforcement. I heard this from 2 different people but never bothered to look into it so I don’t know if there is any truth to it.

That's exactly what I'm getting at. Criminals get away with all kinds of things. I wouldn't be too worried abut a traffic citation. Throw it out and move on with your day. They have set the precedent, not us. Also why people aren't going to obey these travel bans is because of all of the covid restrictions that were based on nothing.

Yeah, but they can and will pull your license which can lead to a lot more problems. Not a lawyer, and I can't tell you what to do, but I can say I wouldn't ignore the citations if recieved.

As a law abiding citizen, I certainly wouldn't let a traffic ticket escalate to potentially take my pistol permit away. They got me.

Now if I was a criminal... I wouldn't care.

Didn't they get those pieces of equipment cheap/"free" as military surplus? How often would they use snowmobiles in the city? This is probably more a case of cost of equipment vs how often it is useful. Budgets aren't unlimited and choices must be made. It's like asking why I don't have a snowmobile instead of a truck? A truck is more useful 99% of the time. This storm was that 1% (actually more like the the 0.001%).

Counter-argument.

This storm previously fucked up other areas of the country before getting to NY. We knew it was going to be really really bad before it hit. We had days notice. It was dubbed "the storm of the century" before it hit.

Maybe people should have gone hmmmm... planned ahead, got prepared, and stayed the fuck home.

I didn't call for rescue. Want to know why? I have weeks of "normal" food at home. I was prepared with a generator, multiple propane tanks, 50+ gallons of gasoline, a kerosene heater backup and 10+ gallons of fuel for it, a well maintained snowblower, lots of proper winter clothing (surplus arctic military gear) both in my car and at home, etc. I also stayed home so I wasn't out there getting myself into a known bad situation. I was well enough to prepared to legitimately go out and grill on Friday evening in wind and all of the storm, I went to bed without a worry of what the storm would throw my way because I was ready for it.

Most people that got in trouble with this storm did it to themselves. They made a series of reckless decisions that culminated in their situation. Most people out there that ended up in trouble were not essential workers like police, etc.
