I'll reiterate my statements that I just made on the Coronavirus thread. Cuomo is a scumbag, statist, rights stomper. Having said that, this is probably the right thing to do to help slow/stop the spread of the virus. If things improve in 2 weeks it can be lifted.

They're not keeping people locked up. It's basically just shutting down mass gathering places.

I have been out and about in New Rochelle along with thousands of other people all day running errands and I have not seen one National Guard vehicle or person. Nobody told me to go home either.

The residents of New Rochelle can sign up for texts, email and phone calls from the mayor that explain what is going on in emergency situations. The city of New Rochelle is not shutting down. Like China and the rest of the affected areas in the world, they are shutting down mass gathering places like Catskillkid said. They are also shutting down 3 schools for 2 weeks within a mile of the synagogue where the virus first started even though nobody in the school district has the virus.

The only good thing that may be saving the virus from spreading rapidly through New Rochelle is that the original person who got the virus is very religious Orthodox Jewish. For the most part he stays in his own circles and sends his kids to private Jewish schools, which are not in New Rochelle, but in White Plains and shops in different grocery stores. That may be the saving grace why its not spreading that fast.

All this stuff is going to slow the virus. None of this is effective at stopping it. The most basic way to stop it is really:

  • Don't touch your face with hands that aren't clean.
  • Assume your hands are always dirty unless you just cleaned them.
  • Leave your phone out of the kitchen. Wash your hands when you enter the kitchen, and eat / do stuff with clean hands only.
  • Every so often wipe your phone done I guess with some alcohol / hand cleaner.
  • Clean shit in your house periodically like surfaces, especially the ones you eat from (should go without saying, even if there wasn't a problem.)
You can't sanitize every single thing in your life. Most things in your house right now are probably crawling with germs. However, you can make sure certain activities are sanitary like eating, or brushing your teeth, etc.

Just use some common sense.

Heard of one way to clean your toothbrush if you don't have an autoclave in your house (mines down for repairs now :rolleyes: ). Put a few drops of hydrogen peroxide on it. It should foam some.

Luckily the idiots haven't bought all the hydrogen peroxide. It's still available mostly.

The byproduct of hydrogen peroxide is just oxygen when it breaks down. Rinsing your toothbrush after adding the peroxide is preferable, but it's far from deadly on it's own. Hell, it's even in the tooth whitening mouthwash I use has peroxide in it.

On Tuesday, Cuomo announced that all schools within a "containment area" in New Rochelle will be closed from Thursday until March 25. A specific list of schools wasn't provided, but Dr. Howard Zucker, commissioner of health for New York state, said the "containment area" is defined as a one-mile radius around the area of the Young Israel of New Rochelle Temple. The temple was locked down after Lawrence Garbuz, a congregant, tested positive for the virus.

Along with schools, all places within the containment area where large groups of people gather will be closed, including temples and potentially a Boys and Girls Club. Residents will be permitted to walk the streets and local shops that don't fall under the definition of "large facilities that do large gatherings" will remain open.

At the percentage it is sold in bottles OTC, it is 3%. Toothpaste is less.

The reason it's no longer recommended for general wound cleaning is that at 3% it causes damage to surrounding healthy tissue, which prolongs wound healing.

But, as usual, YMMV.

Still fine for sanitizing surfaces, but honestly a basic solution of bleach and water is the most cost effective solution.

I picked up just one bottle today. Home depot just sold out of bleach, and obviously grocery stores are empty as well. Best $3 I spent, and will last me easily a year.

Absolutely! OTC hydrogen peroxide I'd use for cuts or infected wounds in a close to emergency situation.

You're correct - real bleach (not the splash-free, it kills nothing, or next to nothing. Also a lot of nasty additives.) is one of the most powerful anti-microbials for surface contamination. And it's cheap and readily available, or at least it was before the panic buying started. I always have 2 gallons in the house - one working and one unopened. Have more now.

In a month once people have stocked up, the supplies will be back -- so you have plenty. I've never gone through a gallon in less than a half a year, and I make spray bottles and mop the floor tiles with some basically weekly. It doesn't take a lot to go a long way.

That containment circle ends A block away from my mother house. Told her to be safe and shop a town over a lot of people in that area of new Rochelle may shop in south end of eastchester.

... Whistlepig, Bullit, or Knob Creek will clean your toothbrush without issue.
