so I don't really have an academic answer for you. My thinking stems from the growing push for gun control as a morality issue rather than public safety. They are using the morality position to shame because by now most people know that guns aren't the issue and public safety doesn't rely on banning them or restricting them. Remember this is really about prohibiting guns, not about public safety. This is what I meant when I mentioned a 'pivotal point' with the anti's and it's through the "morality" angle that they could get more sway. We are already seeing it with youtube policy changes, big banks trying to restrict what clients do with their own money, anti-gun orgs faking grassroots movements by busing and flying kids to protests. The morality angle, IMHO, would ultimately fail though because it is not the real issue, simply an avenue through which to make gun prohibition "fashionable".
With prohibiton, you had the Temporance Movement who's platform was about the destruction alcohol does to morality and society through instances of increased domestic violence against women, public fighting, entire pay checks being spent on booze rather than food for one's family. personal health issues Etc. Etc. The idea of a moral high ground being one of temperance took hold, albeit short lived in the public eye. The 18th amendment arguably created more consumption, violence and crime. As I think we would all agree on here, banning guns would create more markets, violence and crime as well.
