Molot Vepr versus M1A Scout.

Being limited, as we are in NY. Which would you choose?

The reason I ask is there’s a NIB Vepr Hunter for sale which is extremely rare at this point. 2 days left and already at $1400. I’m assuming it’s safe to tack on another few hundred.

Then there’s the old Springfield M1A NY model squad. Probably not crazy about the M1As (not even sure I like my mini that much). Also run about $1200-1400 depending on sales I’ve seen.

If you had to make the choice?

Way more than I would spend on just about anything.

Why not build an AR10 if you have a semi-auto .308 itch to scratch? Probably cheaper than either option above even given today's craziness.

I agree with the majority here, but with the Vepr, you run into compliance issues unless you get the sporter version.

M1As suck. Get a Garand if you like the action.
Incidentally the M1 Garand is a viable NY compliant arm. Its big and heavy but 8 rounds of 30-06 is certainly nothing to be slept on while reloading the M1 is exceptionally swift with practice. Not sure if he still exists but there was an outfit, Shuff's Parkerizing, that did a 16" carbine conversion to the M1 Garand.
The blast would have to be ridiculous.

Oooh! He can do a .308 conversion as well. That is certainly appealing.

Frankly this really would make a pretty good compliant option. You could put on an Ultimak rail for red dot use. And give a Fudd a stroke, which would be an amusing thing to see.

I had both. The VEPR is a better gun in every single way but nome of those two beands are worth 1400 dollars. 16" Vepr will shoot better and be super reliable but one also has to consider continuity of parts if needed in the future that it should not be a challenge but with the demorats putting freezes on imports that could be a long term or forever challenge.
So it might be better to look for alternatives where you can get a spare bolt and/or some firing pins and/or other consumables that might add value to the gun.
This is you are going to use it and stick to it and be serviceable. If it is for collection is not that critical but those prices are not right.

Not a great choice. The design is antiquated and prone to failure and FN are horrible at service. Finding parts is very hard and expensive.
A 308 yugo conversion could be cheaper if one can find a source and plenty of parts around.
What do you want the 308 for?

Negative. Obanana started the restrictions of saigas and alike. We had them for a while because the 2 importers had plenty of stock but soon dried out.
