Again, Mossberg is doing something that others arent. Ill have to find the info but their stocks are built differently than other budget rifles for use with large calibers. Look around at reviews, because thats what matters, the end user.

I first saw it online in reviews, then from a couple gunsmiths, then from Mossberg.
The gunsmiths werent sure about it because they are old and this is new, but they agree the way its made would take stress off the action.

Sure, the factory package (action plus stock) is probably plenty strong considering the lack of horror stories. That's the end of the story for the vast majority of customers - especially in this price range.
For someone that modifies most every gun they touch, having an action that relies on a specific stock system to achieve the required rigidity is a hindrance.

Just found a Remington 700 SPS that I would order right now from them $100 cheaper than the price from the gun shop I use but they won't sell perfectly legal rifles to NYC residents.

Hi,
The concern is not so much on the shank/lug area as it is in other aspects of the design including overall rigidity.
This doesn't mean it is not safe to use, it has to be, but it is also not the strongest action in comparable price range.
Mossberg now follows the legendary Savage directives to reduce cost of manufacturing like everyone is doing these days in order to be competitive with
a decent product so nothing new there.
Remington 700, Savage 16, 10/11 and winchester 70 are the strongest actions. This are well known by design (blueprint) and HP testing. From the savage 10 action the ones used in the LRP and LM are the strongest of all. The axis is up there also if one wants to build a more robust platform and will enjoy some machining on the front to use the standard or over-sized recoil lugs.
I don't mean to discourage anyone from buying a mossberg but at the same time I encourage to carefully consider the alternatives, specially those with unparalleled aftermarket support and proven track record that do not cost more or at least much more.
I put the pictures together, test the rifles and see how they are manufactured.
These are facts not just opinions. I always try to explain why even I might not always explain it well.

What do you think of the Remington 700 SPS with threaded barrel? It comes with some kind of scope, but I'm going to see if I want find it without one cheaper.

Their stocks are bottom barrel like everyone else. If you bed them you will get an improvement but eventually will have to go.
If this is for a beater gun then nobody cares that is why many people go for the best deals they can find.
The reviews are new on new rifles and little or none on people working on them.
People are not happy lately with Remington 700 budget QC and they have a reason for it, yet the action still the baseline
for some of the strongest rifles ever made. Win competitions and serve military.
I trust more the opinions of industry experts than all the reviews one can find online. Also the test of time will only tell.
Like the mossberg parkerizing and marinekote has a long history and it is not all a field of roses. Anyone trying to ignore
this history is not in check with reality.

The action is amazing but the stock is not up to the task. That is the reason I suggest the hog hunter for less money because it is a better shooter starting with savage factory barrels that are superior. Later one can get a better stock if wanted.
But if one wants a remington 700 in that price range of 650-700 the best value is the Bergara B14 that gives you features and quality only found in actions
that cost x3 times more. IMO this one beats the SPS and 5R with its own action hands down and puts you in the major legues for hunting or whatever.
With all that said if one gets a savage 10 with the accustock that is also an amazing value and will not have to touch anything ever as the stock is plenty for
the typical uses and a bit more. The predator line (not the xp) and FCP are hard to beat with the accustock. Ask @dsdmmat about his latest adquisition.
I saw the other day a FCP for $580 after discounts but cannot remember were. I know we posted the deal somewhere.

Personally, I don't care for threaded barrels on bolt action rifles unless, they are on a magnum caliber chambered gun. I think the SPS model you are talking about that has the threaded barrel is 20 inches, correct? In any case it is another way to get you to buy a muzzle device. My FCP in 6.5 CM and my Ruger American in 300 BLK both have threaded barrels and they just are not necessary.

I think @Airborneguy 's get busy gun isn't going to be a bolt action 30-06. It'll be a black one of the 30 rd variety.
For his purposes, an entry level budget rifle at about 300 bucks that comes with a scope and holds zero would serve him well.
It will only be a bench gun and deer gun. You don't need a sniper system for that.
The Mossberg is rugged enough for that purpose and I don't think he'll be doing major upgrades to it for combat duty.
His AR's serve that role. These budget rifles fit his situation perfectly.

Have you looked through the package deal scope and used one?
I have, and while it might be ok for the occasional cherry picked groups, the cheap scope needs to go for any serious use.
Actually this is the case with most bottom line packages so no surprises there.
Perhaps the nikon is the exception to the budget scope and even those budget ones go south once in a while.
I punt those in the same category as the Burris fulfilled but those would not be possible for that kind of deal.
I suggest anyone interested to go and look through one, adjust the ocular piece the best one can (hard with garbage optics) and
then check for picture and features.
who knows... it might work. The thing is one can find much better glass in a older even vintage scope at a gun show or even ebay or gunbroker
given it is not broken or something.
By the way, at the same time we were trying to make sense of the package we had to revisting the screws as the action was unding itself from the stock so we had to retorque. Nothing wrong wiht the aciton but the garbage wood stock. Something that can be solved with some TLC and proper bedding. Also a problem that can happen with other rifles if they do not have pillar or other bedding or not properly designed or done.

First, about 20 years ago Lotus came out with their Elise. The main frame parts were put together with an epoxy, no bolts. They claimed it was stronger and had more flex. Car guys howled with laughter and said a car thats "glued" together will fail. Now, a couple decades later, its the way many manufacturers build their cars, ferrari, lambo, McClaren, lotus.....
Then in the world of smoking pipe making a manufacturer started using Delrin to make their tenon and mortise. Pipe crafters scoffed and said Delrin is too hard and will crack with use. Years later, I dont know a single pipe maker that doesnt use Delrin for tenon and mortise.
Now Mossberg has developed a way to epoxy a laminate "box" under the action which they say makes that area stronger and more ridged.
I dont know but my smithy says the epoxied"box" is there.
Then theres the Chrysler V8 Magnum engine. When it came out the "insiders" raved about it and said it was a phenomenal advancement. Those of us that owned one, the end user will say they were underpowered and over hyped.

That is a sweet rifle. Used is a concern always unless you know the source, care, mileage...
If you want a beater gun then don't worry too much. If the glass falls apart or doesn't hold it is easy to get one.
Of all the guns I'll go with the savage 11 XP with the Nikon to be found for a bit over $400.
It beats the axis II based on the package deal and on top the classic action.
The reasons the same, legendary action, amazing aftermarket, a scope budget but it actually works...
But if the patriot calls your name go for it. It will serve anyone and any issues one can work through them.
I would just go for a 308 vs. a 30-06 for the reasons explained earlier in the thread.
But even for that one might have reasons like having already brass and equipment at hand from grandpas collection.

I was not in the market for another bolt gun but that's hard to pass up!
