Moving Around NYS With Existing Permit.

Quick question, but I had never really thought about it. I don't not plan on moving into another county in NYS anytime soon, however if you already have a NYS pistol permit from one county and move into another, does that mean you need to redo the entire process again for whatever that county requires like you've never had one before, or do they give you a new permit in some other fashion? How do they go about transferring your handguns over and stuff too? I never thought about any of that until recently.

Just go to the new county. They will give you that county permit. No extra work involved. Simple.

Worst part is not being able to add guns while in limbo.

That's a good question. The permit is issued by the county but is valid anywhere in the state except NYC. As far as I know, if you are moving to an adjacent county, you can keep your original county issued permit if you want, but if you move farther away you would need to get the new county's permit. Not sure about having to reapply, but I don't see why you'd have to.

I've heard of people getting restrictions added when changing counties. I decided not to test it when I moved from Madison to Oneida. Luck for me I'm about to move back to Madison so I won't have to worry about it this time.

I've heard of that too, people who had no restrictions having them added in a new county. I'd imagine that is because you would be getting a new judge and they may or may not like to issue no restrictions. I guess they don't care what you had in your old county. So in that regard it may be like starting over.

I'm assuming you would just let the new county clerk know you've moved and they will adjust your new permit accordingly and transfer your handguns over to it. Surely they would not know you've moved and automatically issue you an updated one.

I did it with the existing because I didn't want to chance restrictions. Oneida county has a reputation of doing that. In other words you can keep your permit in another county as long as your address is up to date.

Best thing to do would be to ask your current Clerk about what the procedure is for this sort of thing. For all we know what they want varies between the counties (wouldn't surprise me honestly). If you move anywhere you would need to let your current county know about it though.

That would make sense. As long as you don't need to reapply and jump through all of those outrageous hoops over again. It seems not much different than going to the DMV to take care of that kind of crap. Not that I don't hate the DMV though....

It all depends on the county. Some counties allow you to keep the permit through them and just change your address. Others require you to surrender your permit to the county you are moving to and get issued a new one through the county you just moved to. My county is like that even if I move to an adjacent one. I must turn in my permit to the new county and get a new one through them.

As far as restrictions go, it depends on the county you are moving to. You might of had an unrestricted for the last 20 years but if you move to Westchester, no matter what upon change, Westchester will issue a restricted.

My girlfriend moved from Allegany county to Livingston . She kept her permit down there and just changed the address . Both counties have to be agreeable for that to happen .... Some are not. The only downside is they in Allegany County do not give out coupons like Livingston County. So a bit of running...

I hope you have all caught up with the NYSP's new permit validation rule. Many I know have not received the "letter". Not receiving it is no excuse. If you do not validate by 1/31/18 your permit will be pulled and you will be liable to having your guns take end being charged.

I've done it both ways in the 23 years of having my permit. The first couple moves I didn't change a thing and never had an issue. As times changed into the BS 2000s I did the new Counties permit because I wanted my driving license address to match my pistol permit address so I wouldn't have the chance of them busting my balls if I got pulled over. Yea yea yea "the law states you HAVE to tell them you've moved" blah blah blah, I never did and it never mattered when I was pulled over, I did it for my own reasons.

AND .... after you recertify the NYSP is working to have the fact that you have a permit added to your driver's license.

My experience is as follows: originally in Oswego county, unrestricted. Still there even after not living in county for a while.

Judge decided he would no longer do amendments if not a county resident. Had to move to Onondaga county - Oh, shit!!, hope they don't put restrictions on it. They kept it unrestricted. Wheww!!

Moved to Franklin county in 2011, and it's stayed unrestricted.

You also need to notify the State of an address change. I believe you have 15 days.

I do know of a guy that took the Saratoga unrestricted class had his restrictions removed then move to Albany County and the Judge put restrictions back on his license! This was just recent so I don't know more then that.

Ha, I just recently changed my 28 year old paper permit to the plastic card.

You do realize that the pistol recertification is due 2018 only for those that already had a permit before the safe act correct? Not everyone with a pistol permit needs to recertify on that date. It's every 5 years from the time it was issued.
