Welcome.
Welcome to the forum. I see you joined a few NY/ LI forums to gain knowledge of our gun laws prior to moving back.
Unfortunately, sometimes we're forced to make changes that we're not happy with (coming back to NY).
Whether it's for family, a job, someone that is ill, etc. I admire you for coming back for your family.
The rules vary from NYS to NYC to LI. NYC being the strictest.
I read that you were considering selling your handguns because of the relocation. I would hold onto that S&W if I was you .
It would be ideal If you had someone you know to "hold" your handguns until you get your NY permit. There are a few FFL's on LI that may hold your handguns for you until you receive your handgun permit. A few LI FFL's are sponsors on the forum you joined.
(you can also take down the handguns & let the FFL hold just the frame (serialized part.))
You can transport (unloaded/secured) the rile/shotgun you mentioned to LI, just don't make any stops in NJ & NYC.
Forgot that you were only planning on staying in NY for a year. Then, I wouldn't bother applying for a NY handgun license on LI, because it takes 8-12 mths for the handgun lic process.thank you very much for the information. I'm probably most upset about the Smith as well, but it is replaceable. The problem with having and FFL hang on to them in NY is that there is a chance that I may move out of NY after a year, so I don't know how much of a hassle/how expensive it would be to have it shipped to them, held for the year and then shipped someplace else. I'll look into it though and see. Thanks again

If your not "attached" to the handguns, selling them & repurchasing new ones after you find a "permanent" resident may be the better option.
And you can used the money to build that AR or buy other rifles. Good luck.
Just dont have anything illegal really. The range i go to doesnt have anybody coming around and checking weapons for legality but i know there are some that do. Either have everything be compliant, or just dont go boasting about your stuff that isnt. From the rso at my range, they really only care about the 30 rd mags, but thats out east. People have their non compliant ars and aks at the range i go to and i havent really seen anyone having issues in the small amounts there are. Of course theres risk involved there. But thats up to you to determine whether or not youre ok with that.so, this may be a very dumb question, but how does NY check the legality of your rifles? I ask not to know how to violate the law but to make sure I am compliant when I come up. Do police go to gun ranges and check weapons? Do you need to bring them to a police department and have them give you an all good? Just want to make sure I do the right thing when I get there

And no, you dont have to go check in with the local pd to verify your weapons are legal.
At least we know you wont be the one in shootouts.yeah I'm not planning on having anything illegal. I have zero desire to challenge the police or anyone on what is legal and what is not, so everything will be compliant. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. Thanks
Here's what you can do legally. Rent a storage unit in PA. Store the handguns there. When you move and cross over the GW Bridge into Jersey and then into PA, you pick them up.
You can also legally go to PA on your day off and shoot them there.
I edited my previous post but you are looking at 45 bucks a month.my wife and I have been considering buying a vacation home in PA anyway, so might be somewhat feasible
You're good to go with the shotgun & Mosin that you mentioned.so, this may be a very dumb question, but how does NY check the legality of your rifles? Nothing in the NY Penal Law or Federal Codes says that you cannot store a pistol out of state.so I have an uncle who has a vacation home in PA. Is it legal for me to leave my handguns there (locked and properly stored, and maybe even with the cylinder or slide removed and kept with me just for both of our's protection) while having a NY license and not having residency in PA?
