Moving to NYS around June 1st from Florida.

Is there any way I can keep my functional WW2 German Luger? Family bring back.
I've sold my AK and my AR and a whole lot of handguns. I have a Florida Concealed weapons permit but that's worthless in NYS.
Do I really have to bow down to State regulations in New York State? From what I've read here, handgun permitting is like pulling teeth.

I'm very sorry to hear that, we are severely restricted here and everything else about this place sucks if you are a freedom-minded person. If you don't have to come here you really should reconsider, and you are not allowed to even touch a handgun in New York state unless you have a permit.

Sounds like you know the answer to that and yes you have to bow down to the commie dictators of NYS. All o can tell you is don’t come back. Also you didn’t need to sell your ar’s as you could have modified them to be legal. As for a pistol there’s nothing you can do to get around it unless you fill the barrel with lead. I know a guy that did that and then when his permit was in hand he melted it out. He’s a fantastic welder and knew how to do it though. Probably not the best idea anyway. If the gun isn’t functional then it’s not illegal but a gun like that I wouldn’t mess with.
You could keep it in storage if you get a PA pistol permit or if there is reciprocity. An FFL could hold on to it but I would not be super comfortable with that.
I’ll say it again rethink your plans to move/live here. Lots suck about NYS other than the mountains and plentiful waterways. Even if you’re getting a raise to move here it’s not enough because it will just be eaten up in taxes and fees.

The only way to bring in a pistol legally, is to first get a permit in NYS. Then you have to ship it FFL to FFL. In theory, you only have to mail it to an FFL in NYS, but it's hard to get an FFL to receive it directly. It's also hard to get a carrier to accept a pistol from a non FFL (Fedex, USPS, and UPS won't take it). So, you got to pay on both ends for the transfer. Which is a pain. I'm going through the same thing now as I consider how to move my Dad's pistols from MA to NY and add them to my permit. We did it for one years back.

Yikes! Yeah, you'll have to get your nys pistol permit first. Hopefully you have someone in FL, be it family, friend or very understanding FFL to hold the pistol for you while you go through the joys of applying for a nys pistol permit. Once you have that, you'll have to transfer it through a nys ffl and do the amendment process to add it to your permit.

you do! NYS sucks as far as gun laws and CC! though if you have someone already in NYS that has a pistol permit that can be amended as to adding all those pistols you want to bring to NYS but you have to apply for a NYS pistol permit first! so i dont think there resoprocity but send your questions to the Sheriff Dept of the county you will reside in and ask for the forms or download them Good Luck and God Save Our Guns!!!!

Either the job or the woman better be extraordinary because you are swimming against the stream. The flow of people has been out of NY and into Florida. The gun laws here suck, there is a strong anti gun bias in the press and the political environment and the courts are useless when it comes to the phrase "shall not be infringed."

This. This is the only legal way that I am aware of to be able to bring a pistol in from out of state and be able to legally carry it.

Essentially you will have to hide your pistols out of state with someone you trust. Then meanwhile back behind enemy lines you will have to begin the NY pistol license process. It's a hell of a lot more burdensome now than it was previously, and it used to be a pain in the ass.

Then after that and 6-18 months depending on your county you get your license and then can apply to have your pistol from free America sent to a NY registered FFL and transferred/added to your license for legal carry (ownership) in the people's republic.

Actually. This is a serious gray area that to my knowledge no one here has really explored. But there is an urban legend now under the new CCIA rules that getting a "premises lisence" is significantly easier to obtain than the full lisence. The premise lisence only lets you keep the gun at your residence and use at a range (allegedly). It also potentially does not have all the crazy rules and hoops to jump through. If you quickly and painlessly get your premesis lisence you can the potentially add your Florida pistol via the FFL route the same as before but get your hands on it much more quickly with less hassle. Then once in state with said pistol legally go through the full process.
The premise permit is very vague and even the county clerks are generally clueless. I'm looking into it because I think my wife wants to try that route. She wants to be able to use my pistols but doesn't want to go through the crazy process now...

But seriously make some calls about obtaining a premises permit that might be your fastest easier way to do it legally if for some reason your a masochist and need to move here and can't move somewhere else. Either way keep us posted.

Many of us have left, but I had to come back to sell our offgrid property in the North country. Which, is quite beautiful, I really miss the Adirondacks ( except for the gnats, mosquito's, black flies, deer and horse flies ) ok I lied, I can't wait to sell this place and get gone, never to return ( Unless someone dies and there is a funeral )

personally, I would put the gun a safe, and don't shoot anyone with it. unless you have a family member down there that you trust. I genuine 9mm Luger has to be worth some coin.

Someone correct me, but aren't permit applications on hold until the queen douchebag figures out how she is going to fuck you over next?

The Bruen ruling really turned that dipshit into a raving lunatic, she totally lost her shit over that one.

@PinballWeeze , you're realistically looking at a minimum of 1-2 years, but potentially close to 3 or 4, before getting your permit. You have to be a resident for at least a year before you can even apply, plus you will need at least 4 character witnesses that have known you for that year and can attest to your "worthiness" of owning a pistol.

Also, don't plan on buying any semi automatic rifle without said permit, either. You can OWN them, you just can't buy them. Advice: buy as many semi-auto rifles as you can BEFORE moving.
