Very true for a standard GCM. I had to look this up because I honestly had no clue. The reserves have their own second rate handicap award system because that makes it fair or some nonsense. They give out "Army reserve component achievement medal" instead at 3 year marks. Its essentially a GCM but disguised as a AAM with more letters? There is also a reserve 10 year GCM equivalent called the "Armed forced reserve medal"

They get one for activation of 30 days or longer (like a school or a deployment). Being an SFC I imagine he has had at least one school in 20 years that went over 30 days. He probably has multiple 214s in his jacket, but you are correct they do use different forms to account for all of their service.
