I see, I wasnt aware of the Youngs BCG. I may pick one up on the next build . What do you have for a upper reciever in the 200 250 dollar range?
i was leaning toward a Larue.

I'd definitely defer to @mek on these things much more experience than me....

With that said I'd try the dremel if you dont have a press or mill.

The dremel might be good to get the thing started if one has to resort to a drill press. ( a good one btw).
but what worries me is how to setup a reliable stop not deeper than 10-20 thousands on the threads.
That is why the mill + calipers in hand.

I doubt you could drill this out free handed w/o making a mess. in this case I suggest at least a collar and
you will need a pretty flat cobalt bit if that pin is heat treated. Russian aks destroy any cobalt bits in one session
so they have to be resharpened so a regular bit is just a waste of time.
but ckeck it out, maybe is not heat treated and you are lucky.

But at a minimum put a set screw collar on the bit and check it with the calipers if you don't end up scewing up
the barrel.

Next time the pin should go on the very join between the brake and the barrel step at the end of the threads.

and migh want to use a brake that is 3/4 or less OD so you don't have to remove it to get a gas block in or out.
and btw only use steel, clamp type gas blocks that provide teh best seal and can be open slightly to slide on/off by
reversing the screws.

Well if you feel you have enough room and you are very precise give it a shot. it will not hurt right?
maybe put some soft tin around so the welder doesn't stain the brake or even stick to it.
I would not be confident of a weld like this but I know some people are really good at small yet precise weld.
What I know is those can be a bitch to get out but if you don't try this you will not know.
Give it a shot.

Im not worried about the brake . I can carve it up , Im not all that concerned with the barrel either. I just want to get a new barrel on it. I can get a new brake , no biggie

I think both can be preserved but if you want just get a hacksaw and go to town! lol

I installed one of those on my last upper. I don't remember any problem getting it started though. I have a set of plastic tweezers that I ground a furrow into each tip to hold the pin. I have had a pin or two on other projects where I ground a steeper taper on the tip of the pin to get it started a little better. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

I put a little brake free on it and used a vise grip to hold it , I got it in 3/4 of the way , and I cant get it all the way through. I tried tapping it with a small hammer , not happeneing , I dont want to mushroom the end .

Do you have roll pin punches? It can be done without them, but it's way easier if you have a set. Once you peen over the end of the roll pin it's a PITA to start over
