I think a lot of people forget that Obamacare really should be named Romneycare. The republican Mitt Romney essentially crafted the plan while he was governor of Massachusetts, and Obama borrowed heavily from this plan while crafting his plan:

For sure, no doubt. He was a moderate in a liberal state. But sort of highlights the OP's post about there being a sort of "Uniparty" or whatever the term was he used.
