A friend of mine passed away yesterday. His wife asked about what to do with his guns. Can anyone help with the proper procedure ? TIA
Not quite. The government is not going to "take them" you have 15 days to get them to an FFL where they can be secured until their disposition is finalized. If rifles or shotguns you can sell those easily. The pistols must be on her permit or they will be taken by the government. Check with a FFL and see if they can take them for sale.
This info is consistent with my lawyers advice.I would call an FFL in the area and have them come get the guns and put them on consignment if none of the family members want them. I just went through this with my Brother in law. I secured his guns and got them to my FFL. No police or government involvement was required. Once we had a death certificate we were able to transfer the guns to who they were going to go to and turn in his pistol license.

Can not do better than Bullet guy within 25 miles from where you live.Get any handguns to an FFL as soon as possible.
Make sure he is on board and will work with you.

I honestly can't recall or understand all the details in safe for registered rifles.
They need to go to a federal firearms license dealer or be sold out of state.
When my grandfather died the sheriffs office took his handguns until I got my permit in NY. Yeah it was weird. They issued my permit and added it without a ffl. I’m sure they did a background check at some point. Felt odd picking up handguns from the sheriff and walking out!Due to the safe act of 2013, or firearm transfers ( background check must be performed. ) must go through an FFL.

Good advice. No they did not. Only FFL can do a fed check.
You may be in vilotation. Not sure if grandpa is an immediate family. Check that. If he is you are gtg. If not:
Free advice. Delete your post and dont admit to breaking the law in public.
Nah I’m good. Thanks though. Maybe I had the check done and they issued coupon. It’s been awhile but it was all legal. I know a 4473 was done. The sheriff held the handguns until I got the permit. That much I’m sure of.No they did not. Only FFL can do a fed check.

I have not personally seen the guns yet so, not sure of condition or any extras.
I’m sorry for your loss. Get them to an FFl immediately. Then worry about posting them up for sale. Time is of the essence.
There is 15 days to get them to an FFL if the wife doesn't have them listed on her permit.. If I can get prices and pictures we can make it happen much faster and without worrying about the FFL charging a storage fee
Most counties have a fair amount of leniency in regards to the death of a permit holder.
Any FFL that charges storage fees in cases such as this is a big fucking penis.
Welcome to NY
