Need advice on magazines for m&p9

Just recently bought an s&w m&p9 m2.0, and I'm just getting comfortable with it. I'm looking to grab a couple extra magazines for it, and I wanted to see if anybody has any opinion on the magazine choices out there.

I only see factory or promag if I search, so if anybody knows of another option that you recommend, please let me know. Any experience with promags you can share would also be appreciated.

The 2 factory mags that I received with the gun are RIDICULOUSLY hard to load, and almost impossible to get the 10th round in without a fight. They've loosened up some after two trips to the range, but without a speed loader, they'll chew your thumbs to pieces. Is there any simple way to fix them, or is that just how they are?

Just get an Uplula. I have those mags and ZERO issues with the Uplula

I have an M&P9 V1 and I can't say enough good things about it. You made a great choice with V2 - I expect to get one at some point.

To date I have only used S&W factory mags for it so can't comment on the ProMags. Periodically they go on sale (Midway, Brownell's, Primary Arms, etc) so keep an eye out for the discounts. Ten round M&P mags are notoriously hard to load a full 10 rounds. According to S&W customer service (I called a couple years ago with same problem) they use the same spring in the 10 round mag that they use in the standard capacity 17 round mags Combine that with the shorter mag size and you need to be a power lifter to get the 10th round in. There are a ton of videos on YouTube about this with 2 common fixes: 1) snip a coil or two out of the spring, or 2) cut down the feet/legs of the magazine follower. I had good luck with cutting the follower legs down but have not tried cutting the spring. Disassemble the mag and trim down the legs (I used a dremel) and you should have no problem. Do one at a time and test it before you modify additional mags to ensure you don't go too far. Watch some vids and pick your poison.

If they are anything like the Shield mags they'll loosen up after a few uses. When I first got the Shield getting the last round in the mag was very, very difficult, to the point that I had to jam the last round in by using a hard surface like a tabletop. This was before I got a mag(up)lula. But after a few load/unload cycles it became possible to handload them without undue effort. Just give the mags a little time. All of the springs in the Shield were very stiff out of the box actually but, like the mags everything lossened up nicely after a few hundred rounds.

Smith & Wesson Magazines. This is where I get mine. I tend to stick to factory mags and they do loosen up over time. I got the 2.0 back in march and love the gun good luck.

BlackDragon, I have an S&W M&P 40.
I would stick with the S&W mags.
I have many of them and they work flawlessly.
I also have problems loading the last few in a 10 round mag.
Not only with my M&P but with my Glock and my Ruger.
I agree, you should get a UpLULA™ – 9mm to 45ACP
When I practice I only load 5 rounds so this is not an issue.
5 rounds slows you down, makes you more conscious of your shooting and saves on ammo.
When I go to a training class or a competition I load 10, 5 by hand and 5 by the Maglula.
Even though I could load more than 5 easily I don't bother, I use the Maglula.
I've gotten fast using this method.
Calcusion, now is the time to get an M&P 2.0.

I like your idea about modifying the mags but with my luck I would have a FTF on the last round.

@TopShot I understand your concern but ive had zero problems after modifying my mags. If you try one at a time and test it should be a piece of cake. Worst case you ruin the follower and pick up a new one - Brownell's has them for $2.

Never had a problem with the mags I modified and I've done lots of range days/training with them.

My Glock sometimes has a FTF on the last round when using hollow points.

Which Glock is that? The Glock 43?

That's pretty common with the 10 rounders. Do you have the 2183 follower? The one with a hump? What Glock gen is yours?

Like others have stated here, the mags when new were damn near impossible to load the last round by hand. Mine have loosened up nicely since then. For my Shield 9mm, I use the ProMag 10 rounders. Same issue at first, but fine now. No other issues with them.

Got the uplula over the weekend. Nine rounds go in pretty easy, 10th is still an absolute biatch. I'll give them a couple more runs at the range before i start messing with followers and springs.

I'm going to leave them fully loaded for a few days to see if that affects it at all.

They didn't work well.

Nope they won't. Not sure if the 9mm6 followers are better but you should try them. On my G19's I use 9mm3 followers. Mine are Gen 3.
