New Bench Build

The next decision/setup is how I actually want to mount the press to the bench. If I directly mount it to the bench there a 2x4 on end right in the bolting pattern. I could use lags for sure or long carriage bolts. My issue is if I use lags will they tear out in the long run? If I use bolts I doubt I will be able drill straight enough to come out where I want to be. There is also a third option of going with a strong mount. I already made the bench pretty tall so IDK if this extra height will be an issue. So any input you guys have would be appreciated.

I'm also thinking about trying one of these for my powder dispenser so I don't have to punch another hole in the top of the bench. Any thoughts?

What about making a couple "universal" bases out of plywood, one for each stand/press, and each base would have the same mounting pattern to attach to your bench. In the bench, use a thread insert to bolt into.

But I don't see myself changing presses. My vision was to have a side dedicated to my single stage and add a Dillon to the other side this coming year.

I was leaning towards getting the micro mount so it didn't add too much height but I don't think I will use the quick change system.

So many choices. Try figure what would be the most comfortable for you. If I were to do mine all over I would of made my table top a couple of inches lower and the shelf up above about 5 inches lower, but it's done and I will just be happy I have it.

Added the shelve backers and finished the LED install. After I splice in an outlet behind it i can move it in place and start reloading again.

How are you making out rounding up your reloading equipment?

I have extra die sets if they will work in the set up you end up buying, i dont know anything about the progressive presses.


My oldest son has two of the Hornady progressives, buy I never watched him load on them when I was back there to go hunting.


I am going to.need a progressive here shortly as my grandson is starting to shoot a lot of 44spl, 38spl and 357mag.
The last two times we went shooting he got to shoot a couple of 9mm pistols and wants to shoot my Glock 17.

It looks like you can shoot right at your new place. Your new house should be all together and settled in by now.

I texted both your contacts, we couldn't work anything out but they said they would keep an eye out for what I was looking for. I will probably be looking at buying a new one because there seems to be no used ones in my area. I will probably wait to see what I get for a tax return before making the move.

If you feel yourself getting maxed out and not wanting to spend the money of a progressive then I highly recommend a case kicker for your single stage. I can tell you it made a world of difference. I will try to make a video of mine in action and use the new forum media tab to post it. I also was thinking about making a little picture tutorial of reloading for anyone that is new to it.

I'm stuck on the electrical for the bench finish. I need to splice in a light fixture and run the cable down the wall to a 4 outlet box. I'm not a fan of electrical work and have been spoiled having family that are electricians. I'm still undecided if I'm going to use one of those press risers.

Lastly yes we can shoot right at my place. I'm in the middle of working out a location with my father for more of a dedicated range site. If we can come to a consensus then you will be seeing another thread started and a lot of money to be spent.

I'd put scrap 4x4's under your safe. Too much moisture in concrete = a rusty safe..

Agreed. I used 4" solid concrete blocks bonded to the floor with concrete, and topped them with marine plywood to give a moisture barrier, so I could lag the safe down.

BTW, that is a beautiful bench!!!! Great work!!!

I'm not quite sure the end plan for this safe. So I'm waiting to lag it to the floor. The good news I'd I have a bunch of treated lumber left over from the 3 decks i had to build. I also have that hot water heater down there that also dehumidifies as it heats the water. I can tell you its DRY down there. I'm actually curious to see if I start having static problems during reloading.

My basement is Sahara desert dry in the winter, once summer comes I need to run a dehumidifier. Same poured wall foundation.

Oh I agree. Last summer I was down there working and the hot water heater was running. In 30 minutes I heard the lift pump kick on twice. That thing sucks the moisture right out of the air. The down side is the basement is still freezing cold right now.

Keep anti static dryer sheets in your powder Hopper and you won't have static problems. Also wipe down your plastic powder cans with the sheets before pouring the powder.

It's been a long road but finally got a chance to mount the press. I don't think you can deck out a single stage press anymore than I have.

Then it's time for a progressive press. Have you seen the new Dillon XL750?

Yes one of them are in my future. I just have to spray foam and finish my second floor before the new baby needs it's own room. After that I hope to have enough money for one.

Ya it really lights everything up. They didn't want to stick to the finish of the press so I might have to figure something out in the future. If anyone is running a single stage I highly recommend using one of those auto ejects.

Thank you. It has opened my eyes to finish carpentry. I grew up on the farm and helping people out doing the all the rough stuff. Roofs framing building sheds ect. I never had tried to make anything nice before, just functional.

I have about 6 other projects going we should make a thread for everyone about what they did around the house this weekend or house projects.

Also this has convinced the wife I need to build a dinning room table. I actually just got done talking to my father about it. I might end up buying an Alaskan mill and build the table from wood off of our land. I hope to get it sawed before winter so that I can have it drying in the basement all winter, for a possible next winter project.
