I know someone who drives trains for MTA. Almost everything dies instantly when getting hit by a train. Deer, dogs, people (when they jump, their clothes apparently just explode off their body) ... cats normally get out of the way.

Turtles? Apparently they're the only thing that survives occasionally. The shell protects them enough that they get pushed out of the way, and just have a mark from where the impact gets em.

Well it probably does hurt them based on that. But given the shell is curved, there’s just no way for the train to hit it directly on.

Not to mention a lot of the diesels still have cow catchers, which themselves are designed to push shit out of the way.
