New Henry Classic Lever 22LR

I noticed that Henry Classic Lever 22LR were on sale at Dick's for $299. I've always wanted one. So, I proceeded on full impulse.

I want to get it into the field as soon as possible. I'm wondering what accessories I should get.

I'm thinking about a nice 4x32 Rimfire scope. Something small and light that I can mount close to the bore would be best. Don't want to modify the stock.

I'd also like a nice leather strap with a cowboy theme.


Any suggestion.

I have a small sub-20 dollar 4x20 barska scope on mine that I got at dicks on sale. Its small and mounts tight to the receiver. Pretty spot on to 25 yards.

I have a Centerpoint 2-7x32 on a little Marlin 898 m-1 with low rings that's not a bad little scope. Have it set up as a Appleseed loaner and for CMP Rimfire Sporter matches.

Skinner sights are great, not cheap, but worth the money.

Well, I ordered the brass stacker sling. Nothing like spending 30% the cost of a rifles
on the sling. But, it looks awesome.

I have to say I'll be putting a scope on my Henry. It's a nice riffle, but the accuracy is the worst out of any of my .22 riffles. Every once in a while I'll pull a shot with my others, but I'm super accurate and consistent most of the time with them. My Henry is kind of all over the place. Not too bad, but it's definitely noticeable compared to my others. Also I like the sights. Maybe it's just hard to use the sights because like the OPmy eyes are not what they used to be.

I found a super-cheap Barska 3-7x20 scope in the back of the closet. I mounted it on the Henry as a interim optic. The rain kept me out if the woods, so I took it to the range to get sighted at 25 yards. I sighted in using CCI SV and tested CB shorts, Target Shorts, and Aguila super extra.

The accuracy was acceptable for a rifle of this price, but not mind-blowing. Certainly, no worse than my 10/22 out of the box. The action was reliable for the most parts with no jams, bad feeds, or failed extractions. I did get a few light strikes. Those all fired on the second try. I'll pull the bolt and make sure it's clean. I cleaned the bore before going to the rang, but I didn't clean the bolt.

The CCI shot the best. The Aguila was also good. The shorts shot like garbage. The scope is also sub-par in the extreme, so my results are not definitive.

I don't think you'll have any trouble killing squirrels all day long with that so so accuracy.

I bought a nice cabelas scope for $75.00 formerly $150 so half priced. I figured I'd take a chance and if I didn't like it I'd pass it on to the kids.

Just a new Henry update.


First, the rifle is a real kick to hunt and shoot. The lever action is just ad fun as claimed. I still prefer a bolt-gun for beginners and serious range shooting. But, I regret not buying one years ago.


I wanted to get a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x32 scope. But, I discovered that Nikon no longer makes them. My CZ uses a Bushnell 4-14x40 that works well, so I opted for a Bushnell 4x32 Rimfire scope. Well, that scope is garbage. It would be good enough for breaking clays to shooting cans at 50 yards. But, the soft focus, dim image and lack of resolution make it insufficient for squirrels. I dug out a spare Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 rifle scope. At the lowest magnification, it works fine. The only issue is that the size really spoils the lines of the rifle.

I've ordered a skinner barrel sight. I'll use that after I get a chance to practice using the open sights. But, I want to hunt a bit with the Henry this September.


I took the setup to the range to get it zeroed. After zeroing it at 25 yards, I moved the target back to 50 yards to shoot some groups. I shoot at Davis in Goshen. It is a 100 yard indoor range.


I shot 50 rounds in 10 groups of 5. The average group size was a hair under 3/4 inches with the Federal Premium Target. I consider this highly respectable for a $300 stock 22.

My CZ 455 American is more accurate out of the box. Yet, I can't wait to get it out to the quarry to abuse some steel targets. The fun factor is definitely there.

I usually avoid weekends. But, I like to go at least once a week. I'll go twice a week if I'm able.

I prefer Tuesday morning. But, I'll also go Saturday, Sunday or Friday mornings depending on my work schedule or family plans. I'll go less during hunting seasons...if the weather permits.

Doesn't have to be bought there, I paid around 20 for mine. I have 2, one for each rifle. I stuff em up with 120 rounds and boom boom boom boom boom..sounds like I'm shooting a machine gun it can be loaded and firing again so quickly.

I've got a speed D loader coming. I don't really need one for range shooting. I'm not in a hurry there. But, I'll totally use it for plinking.

It funny. I use the same size scope on my other Rimfires and it is not so obtrusive. But, I really dislike the look of it. I have a skinner sight. Henry Rifles I'll put it on at some point when I have time to practice with it. Leopold makes a 2-7x28mm scope that I might end up getting. But, I'd prefer to make the skinner sight work.

Wish I could go during the week but I work in lower westchester. Nice that you are close enough to go frequently. I'm envious.

I live 45 minutes away. But, I work from home two days a week. It makes my daytime schedule very flexible. I'd love to join a club. But, I'm not much of a joiner and I'd have trouble going to the meetings regularly.

That's a beautiful gun. That makes me want one now. I've read a lot about the Henry rifles, and seen a couple videos. I'd like to get one someday. But I've never shot a lever gun. My old work partner has a couple of really old winchesters. Beautiful guns.

Very affordable, very fun. Almost always under 200$ at my LGS. The one thing about levers, you'll get more proficient in aiming. Usually iron sighting with levers and always pulling it off your mark to re-cock..takes some getting used to but a whole new experience of fun.

I really like that sling what is that. Looks nice. I agree I put a large scope on mine and it looks out of place too. I could not get very good groupings though. My other 3 .22's I can shoot 1/4" sticks in half. My kids shoot cans off trees and I shoot the limbs that the cans are hanging on. Not so much with the Henry.
