I also head of pontential legislation to have all cars installed with breathalyzers to start them for EvERYONE....I cannt remember where I read it but take it with a grain of salt since its heresay but I swore I read that...Willhave to try and find it again........Keep my cars ane BIKEs going!!!!

As with a lot of safety electronics in cars, there will probably be a way to bypass it.

I am not sure if it is a law or not, but you can't enter addresses into your navigation system unless the car is parked and in some cars the e-brake on. I have this bypassed in a few of my cars and can enter changes while driving. There is ways to bypass the TPMS and remove the top speed limiter, so there will be some way to bypass the kill switch if someone figures it out.

The question I have is, despite being installed, is it illegal to remove? If it's not illegal to remove, it will be the first thing I do on any new vehicle.

It would be embedded into most likely the BCM. It's your vehicle do what you want. The only chance you have at killing it is to disconnect the antenna which is also likely going to kill whatever other service that uses, cell hotspot, XM, auto android etc.

Just need to find a version of the firmware that disables it and flash the BCM then. Assuming that's possible.

Until a few model years ago I had manufacturer level access to P/TCMs. GM for example, started encrypting everything to be dicks. There are workarounds for this now, but all expensive. The biggest problem is the aftermarket while they are completely capable of unencrypting/modifying a BCM there is no service/software or current demand for them to do so. The only demand is P/TCM so thats what they support.

When I was in college back in the early 80s, we had a state trooper as a guest instructor one day. He said back then that the day would come when cars could be shut down remotely. That's already possible with systems like OnStar. And it doesn't have to be an active subscription.

This got me to thinking about smart meters for your house. With the technology to remotely read the meter, it wouldn't be a stretch to think they could remotely shut your electric off.

Which is yet another reason to buy a Jeep.
The aftermarket support for Jeeps does include devices to reprogram the PCM since the dealerships won't.
It isn't a stretch to believe that they day will come when full operating system replacement will be possible if Jeep decides to try locking people out.

I already told my wife I want a jeep as my next car. Even more reason to do so now.

I could see this saying your impaired if you are driving down a dirt road avoiding pot holes or large puddles. How about snow if you’re sliding around and moving the wheel?

Chrysler was one of the first to encrypt their PCM, but that has been broken. Again P/TCM aftermarket support exists but BCM support is likely lacking because there is no call for it really.

My MIL is a terrible driver, her toyota constantly warns her to pay attention and take breaks because she is all over the road.

Just gut the factory BS and put in your own hardware.


I'm seriously considering this for my Jeep YJ.

They're going to abuse the hell out of this. Your cars gps says you're going 85 on the northway and they'll shut it down. Pass someone too fast in a 55 zone and they shut it down. They'll stop once the lawsuits start piling up from injured motorists who's car was disabled. Or from relatives of dead motorists

Maybe she shouldn’t be driving then. I don’t know, but I’m sure many elderly will have issues going forward if this is the case.

This is why I drive an old pickup truck with a millennial theft deterrent and manual 4x4 with manual locking hubs.

I know every little detail of the truck and know how to fix it, along with having spare parts for it on hand.

Best of all, I know how to weld, and have a welder. Along with metal leftovers in case I need to fabricate a fix.
