New shooter trying to navigate the NYC laws regarding ammo

Hello,

My friend and I recently started shooting handguns. We're both hooked but we're having some issues working thru all of the laws and restrictions around buying our own ammo online.

We live in NYC, we shoot in NJ. We don't have any licenses or permits. We are trying to figure out how to buy our own ammo instead of paying for the expensive ammo at the range. I'm hoping there is some kind of legal work-around that someone might be aware of.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

To clarify - the range in NJ says they can’t let us use our own ammo since we are from NYC they would have to assume we transported it thru the city and as this is illegal they wouldn’t allow us to use it- even if we told them we bought it somewhere else and didn’t take it to the city.

No I think I said pretty plainly I’m looking for a legal work around. I’m asking how I can legally purchase my own ammo and legally bring it to the range.

Learn how to reload ammo.

The vast majority of ranges that offer you RENTAL guns will make you buy their ammo for the rentals, if you want to shoot your own ammo you have to bring your own guns. Ammo for rental guns tends to be overpriced in many places, might as well apply for your NYC premises handgun license. The only other work around that I can see if you borrow a friend’s gun and shoot it with your own ammo at a range or private property, outside NYC limits and while they are present. If you have left over ammo it has to be stored outside city limits until you get a permit.

Find cheap ammo, find FFL that will do deal for around $15.00.
Get flat rate shipping.
Obey the law or you will wish you did.
NY has no tolerance for nonsense in this area.
They want to disarm everyone. Any violations are just
gas on the fire.
Still cheaper than you can get here.
Buy ammo 1000 rnds at a time, there will be a day when
you can;t buy it in any amount for any money...to paraphrase
"One day there will be no guns...Yes that day will come...but not today"

Ask the range your shooting if they will let you ship ammo there and pay a small transfer fee. They likely won’t let you if your renting one of their guns.
As stated get your handgun permit and buy ammo elsewhere to save a ton of mo way.

Ny state laws suck enough I don't have the time or inclination to try to learn NYCs laws or what is different about them. I just know enough to never ever ever go there. Ever.

Do you have a NY pistol license or just rent from range in NJ?

Can you not have ammo in NYC? What do people on long island do?

Maybe look into going to a PA range? I'm sure PA is far more lenient.

So the Nj range has specific rules for NYC residents regarding ammo? That sounds very strange.

You can always get deliberately arrested and try to get your case to the SCOTUS

Luckily for you there is an exception that allows you to posses pistol or revolver ammo if you have a rifle in that caliber listed on your rifle/shotgun permit.

If you have a clean record they will give you residence permit. It will cost you hundreds of dollars, thousands in the long run and you get nothing in return. They will breathe down your neck for the rest of your natural life and if you manage not to slip up even once, they will still take your guns by harassing your spouse.

Im as far west as you can get, Chautauqua Co.
Here you are only given unrestricted permits as well, no hunting/target or premises.
We are a shall issue county.
Even with some blemishes on your record, you get a carry permit.

That's not true at all. It's wrong to have to get one at all, but it is easy to get a NYC premise permit.

makes no sense to have a premise permit, you can;t do anything with it. You want home protection, get a shotgun.
Otherwise its like owning a Lambo but you can;t drive it you can;t even start it up..So you end up with a gun that you can;t carry, transport or shoot. Does that make any sense to you?
