New York Gov. Calls For Removal of Confederate Names From NYC Streets
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is calling for the removal of Confederate Generals’ names from New York City streets.

In a letter to the Secretary of the Army, Cuomo urged the renaming of Stonewall Jackson Drive and General Lee Avenue in Fort Hamilton, Brooklyn.

Read the letter below:

Dear Acting Secretary McCarthy:

On August 7, the U.S. Army denied requests by community leaders and legislators to remove the names of two Confederate Generals from streets on its Fort Hamilton Army Base, claiming that renaming the streets would be “controversial and divisive.” The streets – Stonewall Jackson Drive and General Lee Avenue – are named for leaders in the Confederate army who fought to protect slavery.

Given the events of this week, including the violence and terrorism perpetrated by white supremacists in Charlottesville and the resulting emboldening of the voices of Nazis and white supremacists, I now strongly urge the U.S. Army to reconsider its decision and I call on them to rename these streets.

The events of Charlottesville and the tactics of white supremacists are a poison in our national discourse, and every effort must be made to combat them.

Symbols of slavery and racism have no place in New York. In our state, we condemn the language and violence of white supremacy in no uncertain terms. Unlike President Trump, we stand together to say that there are not many sides to hatred and bigotry; they do not belong in our communities and must be denounced for what they are. Renaming these streets will send a clear message that in New York, we stand against intolerance and racism, whether it be insidious and hidden or obvious and intentional.

If these street names survived the Civil Rights movement I see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to stand today. But this isn't just about a street name, or a statue, or a monument, or even about the Civil War and it most certainly isn't about slavery or civil rights or racism.

It is about our combined American History and Culture and it is something that, today at least, the Left (radical and not-so-radical) is trying to eradicate and re-write.

I had a great-great-great grandfather who fought in the Civil War for the North. He was given a field promotion to an officer and trained freed slaves to fight the Confederates (similar to what you saw if you ever have seen the movie Glory). I am supremely proud of that. I'm also very proud of my now deceased maternal grandfather who was a WWII vet and took a German bullet in the chest and barely survived the war. Neither one of those men lived through hell for me to be a racist or a Nazi. But neither did they fight, bleed and suffer for our history to be degraded before our very eyes.

History can be ugly. Especially American history. It is far better for it to be front and center for us to review it, reflect on it, and think about it than it is for us to tear it down and pretend it never happened. And regardless of what anyone tells you very few of the soldiers, enlisted or officers, in the Confederate Army were fighting to preserve slavery just as very few soldiers in the Union Arm, enlisted or officers, were fighting to abolish it.

I have a great admiration for Robert E. Lee. He was America's greatest general, a scholar, a gentleman, and a man very much opposed to slavery. In his own words: "There are few, I believe, in this enlightened age, who will not acknowledge that slavery as an institution is a moral and political evil." Does this sound like a man who hated black people? If there were men in government like Robert E. Lee we would be a far better nation. I can assure you of that.

It's a sacred place with beautiful monuments to both Union and Confederate soldiers, who as Abraham Lincoln said, "gave the last full measure of their devotion." So far they haven't called for monuments to be brought down in those places but you know they're coming. I'm far too much of a wuss, but that I would gladly stand with anyone, right or left, who loves history to persevere those treasures. Those that died on both sides of the Civil War had far more honor and integrity than any of the assholes, whether they be skinhead neo-Nazis or Antifa goons, who marched and fought in North Carolina.

I was always struck by the monument in Gettysburg to the State of Virginia. Robert E. Lee and his noble horse Traveler are there proudly on display for all to see, as it should be. I'm glad I took these pictures when I did. Who knows how much longer they will be there.
