New York state leads the country in government debt per resident

New York state ranked highest in government debt for residents in 2015, the latest data available.

The debt per person was $17,528 in New York state, according to the Empire Center. The center is a non-partisan, non-profit think tank based in Albany that calls for policy reforms based on free-market principles, personal responsibility and effective and accountable government. It used data from the U.S. Census Bureau and Bureau of Economic Analysis to calculate the rate for each state.

The next highest state was Massachusetts, with government debt at $13,733 per person. Wyoming had the lowest rate, with $3,376 of government debt per person.

New York state has ranked highest each year since Cuomo took office in 2011. Government debt was $17,204 per capita in New York state that year, according to data from the Tax Foundation, a right-leaning tax policy and finance analysis organization.

Rochester removed our RLC, because, as our mayor, Lovely Warren said "These cameras disproportionately target Low-income families" in other words, low-income families tend to break the law more often?

Something like 70% off the revenue generated by red light cameras goes to the companies that installed and operates them. Its all a big scam.
When I was stationed at Ft Sill OK years ago I remember hearing about a failed attmept to install these infernal devices a few towns over.
The town had give up on it though, every night after the newly installed cameras went up the were destoyed by, and I quote the news story, "high powered rifle fire". Apparently no one ever heard or saw anything, go figure.

That's debt per capita (every man, woman, child, and the other 30 some odd things someone in NY can claim as a gender) and I believe the state debt is over $70,000 per taxpayer and there are still unfunded liabilities that are not included in these reckonings.

As posted earlier, over $70,000 per taxpayer. There are about 20 million "residents" and about 5 million (and falling every year FUAC) taxpayers. I understand the Empire center does not even capture all of the debt / obligations / liabilities / mandates at the state or local levels so reality is even bleaker. FUAC.

Very true. And that means we're worse-off now than in 2015, because the debt goes up and the number of people to spread it over goes down every year. Count me among those who look forward to becoming "ex-New Yorkers".

Yeah I'm sure my $24,000 a year pension is just bankrupting the state. I should have done like my 2 younger pothead brothers and went on disability. They get not much less than me and no one gives them shit about it. Not all public employees make 6 figures.
