Newbie Question regarding pistol caliber carbine

Hello everyone, new to the forum and I figured I ask the wonderful community before I go trudging to the gun shop making a fool of myself..

My question is, do you need a pistol permit to buy pistol magazines for your carbine I'm not 100 percent sure. Also if so is there a way to get additional mags for my pc 9 that aren't oem? Brand suggestions welcome and appreciated.

You do not need a permit to buy pistol carbines, magazines or ammo.

Stick with OEM mags.

Depends on which PC carbine you plan on getting.

The original PC9 was a Ruger produced from 1996-2006. It takes certain magazines.
The new Ruger PCC can use either Glock or Ruger magazines ( with magwell adapters). They take Ruger SR9 series mags, both compact and full size 10 rd ones. They come with a SR9c mag.
They will take pretty much any Glock mag and most Glock clone mags work well. ( Magpul , korean,) There is plenty of info online. Just remember that you are not in a Free State and must use restricted mags.

ProMags are said to be questionable and should be avoided.
Check Ebay , they are on there often. Not cheap ( $25ish)....

If you're getting an AR pattern PCC ( Pistol Caliber Carbine), they mostly use Glock or Colt mags.

ProMags are said to be questionable and should be avoided.

Almost an understatement. ProMag makes all their money on being essentially a trap for newbies; a lesson to be learned really.

If not buying factory mags, generally your lowest cost to highest quality winner is going to be Mec-Gar. In fact, Mec-Gar produces a lot of branded 'factory' OEM mags for various companies, most of the big ones. Those companies will then be happy to sell you the same mags for twice the price as 'factory' mags, rather than Mec-Gar branded.

To the OP, No permit needed to buy pistol magazines.
Buying ammo can be a hassle though. Some big box type places like Walmart want to see a pistol permit in order to sell you "pistol" ammo.
It's their stupid ass company policy - Not a law.
Go to an LGS or other retailer for your ammo.

I've read through the forums and really couldn't find, the answer to my question. I asked because my LGS owner the one who sold me the pc 9 asked if I had my pistol permit to which I said no... he said well if you get your permit you can use glock mags with this rifle as well... so that's where my confusion came in. I assumed the pc 9 came with some type of mag that wasnt pistol in design. But some further research revealed it was an SR9 pistol mag... again this still confused me as the LGS said get your permit and you can use glock mags... now thinking about it perhaps he meant I could use glock mags if I had a glock as well... but I thought asking the community would help alleviate some of some confusion about owing a pistol caliber carbine for the first time.

Being from NY makes gun ownership a hassle to begin with, when I first went to get a pc 9 I went to a big box store and they wouldn't sell to me because it took hand gun ammo, I later found out it was their policy not law... my lgs ordered me the pc 9 and sold me the ammo for it... but as I replied to the cool coolone the LGS confused me by asking if I had a pistol permit. In order to use glock mags... so I assumed the pc 9 used a proprietary mag that made it ok to own without a permit. So that's really what spurred my investigation into how to acquire additional mags for my pc 9. And some nice people already answered and I ordered some oem sr9 10 rd mags from ebay... I didn't think asking a question to clarify would be taking so outta context. Thank you for you reply...

Thanks Darth, this is what I did this morning. Just trying to make sure I'm compliant. NY is not a fun place to break gun laws... and I wanted to make sure that I wasnt missing some detail about pistol mags and carbines...

I think we all need to stop being so damn suspicious about new members asking questions.
Even if it is some anti gunner trying to get cute so what? All we have to do is what we always do IRL, give advice that abides by the law, because we gun owners are the most law abiding segment of the population by nature anyway.

You should never take what the guy behind the counter at a lgs or big box store says as accurate.
If you are talking about Ruger's new pcc9, it comes with a mag well adapter to allow it to take glock mags. So you can remove the factory installed one and replace it with the glock adapter if you wish. It's a good idea because glock oem mags are both widely available and pretty reliable. You don't need a pistol permit to buy glock or any other brand pistol mags. The only restriction would be capacity. 10rnds only.

The most cost effective mags are Magpul Glock clones.
Most common mags in general are Glock.
I'd only use the Ruger ones if you have a Ruger pistol to go along with the PCC, depending on how many mags you want in inventory.

As a FYI, Mec-Gar will not sell Ruger SR9 mags or parts. Ruger does not sell mag parts either, just complete magazines.
Nobody will sell just the mag base to convert a SR9c mag ( that comes with the carbine) to full sized 10rd mag the will work in a SR9.

real Glock mags cost 1/2 of what a Real ruger mag costs for the ruger PCC.
i sold the ruger mag that came with it and bought 2 glock mags.

make sure they are the double stack mags from a Glock 17, 19 or 26.
they all fit but are much different in length (10 round versions)

Yes, it should be noted that factory Glock magazines are cheaper than most factory mags. They go for around $25 online which is reasonable.

Welcome to the forum. Please stop by the introductions forum and introduce yourself. That usually is the best way to go. As our members have stated there is no requirement to have a pistol license to buy a pistol magazine. Nor is it law to have one to buy pistol caliber ammo. Make sure to buy 10 round mags they are all over the net, and will ship to your door. Ammo don’t bother with the big box stores go to the local gun stores and get it there. Then get into reloading and lose all your life savings while “saving money on ammo by reloading.“

Double stack 17 and 19 mags aren't NY legal.

Thanks for the advice, I'm a relatively new gun owner, this is my 3rd gun. I have a Henry AR7 survival rifle, and a Winchester sxp 20 gauge shotgun. So laws and such aren't my area of expertise. Though I do read them. They are confusing and i often receive conflicting information when asking around. For example the range I shoot at, offers AR style PCC with all types of features and said its considered an other fire arm. I go to the place where I purchased the PC 9 and told them about that gun and they said they were well aware of them and as far as they were concerned they were very much illegal in NY and the only Other Firearms they sell were shockwaves as they been established as legal in NY. Again thank you for taking the time to answer my question like so many others have...

I was in the same boat at one time navigating the rough NY laws. Been at it so long that I've been told the same lies enough, heard the same questions enough, and actually can grasp the laws just enough to the point now I just call out stores publicly when they spread these common lies.

The "you must be 21 and have a pistol permit to buy handgun ammo in NY" lie is just that, and an incredibly common one.

So is the pistol permit to buy magazines one. Pure nonsense.

A respectable explanation, although not required, this explanation in your OP would have made the question more clear.

You went on and posted a few more times which made yourself familiar to others, that was also my point entirely.

If you look at your OP and the way I disected it, you may observed the references and how if framed in that manner would be suspicious. Honestly, I couldn't care much, I just like to call it the way I see it. Right, wrong or indifferent... There are too many times people show up, ask loaded questions, or pointed questions on contemporary hot topics and then disappear.
