No new wall, Use National Guard

We can't use US Army on domestic US, unless a mass invasion.

Instead of building a $15-$20 billion wall; Why not use the National Guard to aid the US Custom agents in the patrol for the boarders. We're paying for the National Guard anyway ! (NG has helicopters and other equipment on hand)

Many would double or triple their salary.
Put them in tents and don't pay the per diem and many would have to be forced to recall.

It really is easy to protect the southern border against illegals. There is just not enough will; hasn't been in many, many years.

I agree, the wall is a waste. Hire more patrol and use better surveillance equipment. There will always be that percentage that learns to scale the wall or defeat/destroy it somehow. Border crossers can be stopped without an expensive physical wall which will require much maintenance. The more difficult they find it to cross, the fewer will attempt it. Landowners and others on the US side should also be given immunity from thwarting/apprehending those who make it across, maybe even a bounty for each live illegal caught.

I suppose we shouldn't have walls around prisons either.
Build it, it doesn't need to be one continuous wall, make choke points where it is just as hard to cross as a wall would be, those areas covered by boots on the ground.

I think you need the wall. A wall with sensors and cameras. A sensor goes off and a helicopter is dispatched.

It's a lot cheaper and safer than spreading thin agents along miles.

All this talk about the wall. What about what's going on underground. Massive hidden ventilated and well lit tunnels connecting the US and Mexico. Many still being used right now, many never found yet. There are so many sophisticated ways drugs and people are being smuggled. You can build a big stupid gold wall and it might reduce the amount of illegals slightly, at an expense that's likely not going to make much of a difference. They will always find a way.

Half a century ago I spent a lot of time helping to control access to an area where we did not want entry by unauthorized foreigners. Our methods and equipment were pretty crude by today's standards. We had bunkers and watch towers every so often. We had field telephones for communications. We had tin cans & wire for intrusion sensors. We had concertina wire to mark the border. We had pop flares for illumination (Starlight scopes were something the fricken Army was rumored to have, they always got the good stuff - lol). We had roving patrols and rapid (?) response teams. And we had authorization to respond to attempted intrusion with deadly force if necessary.

What we did not have was an unauthorized entry problem.

Securing our borders is not a matter of what is possible, it's a matter of will.

I am not sure about a wall. I prefer incentives. Like removing the incentive to come here and work. All employers should be required to use the E-verify system to ensure anyone they hire is a citizen or a legal immigrant. Fine the hell out of employers that are caught using illegal labor. If employers don't hire them, they won't come here and the ones that are here will go back home. I'd like to try that first and if it fails then build a wall.
