Actually both new judges that were elected are pro 2A
Now that Brunetti & Aloi are gone more people are once again getting non restricted CCW permits.

Thank you all! I think the thing that helped the most was doing research on my judge before writing the letter. I found out you didn't need a "just cause" reason for my judge. Just had to send him a nice letter and explain a few things and it should be a done deal. I sent Loworange a message explaining more in detail. All in all it was an easy going process. I think the one judge still around that is harder to get unrestricted with is Miller.
I must have gotten the short straw on that one. I did keep my permit in Onondaga when I moved into Oswego because, believe it or not, it would have been easier to get unrestricted in Onondaga. I guess now there is a "path" to get unrestricted in Oswego now. Some $200 class, range time, and then maybe you can get unrestricted if the judge is having a good day.

Sort of new to the county (~6 months) from this time, from out of state. Plan was to go for Sportsman in the meantime and go for Unrestricted amendment at a later date. Is that the right call or should I go straight for Unrestricted? Tough to answer I'm sure as its very situational but figured that because I'm new to the county and state that having the permit for a bit with good standing would help my chances down the road.

Stop at dinner or Walmart to and from the range and you are fine.
And “it is not a CCW permit” is bullshit. Call it semantics but the permits issued are CCW even with restrictions.

You have just described the benefits of a full carry permit in Onondaga County. Going to Walmart. Walking around your neighborhood. Etc. if you carry a loaded firearm under these circumstances, and you have an administrative restriction on your pistol permit, you are in violation of that restriction, and therefore subject to revocation or suspension by the licensing authority.
The sentence on the back of your permit stating that “all weapons to be carried concealed “ applies in a completely different way than an unrestricted pistol permit. Under an administrative restriction, you can conceal your weapons to and from the stated activities on your permit when the gun is locked, in a locked box, unloaded, and the ammunition is subsequently far enough out of reach and locked away that you can’t immediately load the weapon and you can’t utilize the weapon upon a moments notice.
You may encounter a local police officer that will let you go home with your loaded gun strapped to your hip when you only have an administratively restricited pistol permit for that weapon. But make no mistake, if you encounter a state trooper or an officer that strictly abideds by the permit law, you are in big, big trouble.
If you don’t believe me, just contact your local trooper barracks. They’ll be glad to coroberrate my tale.

We here in Onondaga Cnty. Can celebrate the fact that for the first time in many years all three of the judges that issue permits are issuing more first time applicants non restricted CCW permits.

As per a well seasoned locally based firearms instructor, and as per a highly regarded local law enforcement officer, if you have a permit with "restrictions" i.e. hunting and target, you are not guilty of even a misdemeanor. The issuing judge will decide if your permit is revoked but you're not going to jail.

Morning! I called the Onondaga cty pistol office and asked who the new issuing judge is that took over for Brunetti. The woman on the other end was very polite and stated that for for the upgrade letters, no one took those duties over specifically. I was instructed to simply make out my letter to “Your Honour” and when they(the pistol office) sends the letter over to the courthouse, it goes to one of the three current judges randomly.

Requests in regard to pistol licenses and specific upgrades go to the issuing justice in Onondaga County. Therefore, whoever issued your permit, is the one that will ultimately respond to whatever request you make.
Whom ever you spoke to did not tell you the right response. It’s probably better if you look up existing legislation than taking people at their word.
Would you care either way? I thought this was a forum for people interested in current NYS pistol law and a place where people could get accurate information on how to obtain a permit in Onondaga County. I’m simply quoting the legislation in regard to permit law in Onondaga County.
Getting caught indicates a violation of existing law. Something we probably don’t want to address on this forum, right?
