I have no worries of a home invasion, our home would not be very inviting to an invader. Securely locked doors and windows, motion lights and sensors, and multiple large dogs.
But.....if someone did make their way through the above, ill make sure they are inside before I neutralize them.

There is no duty to retreat in NY State in one's home. But what is "surrounding area"? It sounds like they chase the guy onto the porch or something and then killed him there?

A gated rear porch that is not your routine service entrance is normally considered the inside of your home.

Why does NY have so much hatred towards its tax paying law abiding citizens? In almost any other state in this situation, the local PD and coroner would have come and cleaned up the mess and told the homeowner to have a good night. Only in NY can a law abiding citizen protecting his or her family get in more legal trouble than the criminal.

The issue is the incident inside or at the home was over. They chased him out onto the lawn and beat him to death on the lawn. It was over they got a bat and three of them went outside.
Yes, but dead criminals would certainly alleviate my tax burden. DAs perhaps even more so.
That this was a problem either ethically or legally speaks to the urgent need for society to change its massively wrong headed attitudes towards the disposition of criminals.
This particular ex-criminal will not cost the taxpayer for his storage and maintenance nor will he ever have the chance to trouble anyone ever again. This is a large net gain for society.
Given the deplorable overcrowding issues in prisons and the extreme ethical problems in the prison-as-a-buisness system I think it only logical for the citizenry to begin aggressively striking against the primary capital of this whole morass: the criminals themselves.

Same happened around here a few years ago.
2 guys broke into a known drug dealers house to rob him.
He used a shotgun to kill 1 and wound the other.
No charges were brought against him.
The cops didnt even search his house, he was the victim.
Imagine that, law abiding cops doing law abiding things.
The DA at the time is our current judge who hands out unrestricted pistol permits like candy.

Part of me longs for the good old days when purple tied troopers would relocate intruder's remains back over the victim's threshold to preclude an injustice and when these same purple ties were proud that no one who killed a NYS Trooper died of natural causes.
