You're getting off track. Any country that doesn't let its people leave freely is a shithole. That is a very basic, and consistent metric of a shithole country. It's just a prison with more fresh air. Soviets didn't let people leave because they knew they were desperate to do so. You can always look at immigration flow to determine which countries are the shitty ones.

Countries without walls don't exist for long.

We stayed on the sidelines for most of the fighting in two world war. Got in at the end to assert influence. UN, not NATO was created to prevent future world wars.

When people left Soviet Union, the first thing they noticed is how awful the food tasted in the West. It looked good and delicious but tasted awful. Ham tasted like soap. Bologna was uneatable. Strawberries lacked the aroma. Peaches dry and tasted more like boiled potatoes. Bread like cotton. Chickens lacked the flavor. The common remark was, how can they eat this shit. Anyone who lived in the Soviet Union should remember, how these foods should taste. Yes there were shortages but for the most part, stores were stocked with better quality foods and very affordable. Bread was real bread. Cold cuts were fresh and appetizing. There were also private food markets where you could buy anything.
I understand that deteriorate toward the end of 80's, but my memory is stores well stocked with basics and markets full of delicious foods.

I didn't see a banana until the mid 90s. My grandmother lived in an apartment with no running hot water, no shower. Just a sink and toilet. That was the norm. The stores were fully stocked, 4-5 types of bread delivered daily, often still warm from the oven, cold cuts freshly made without any additives. You can't even get them like that in specialty stores here. Baked goods, pastries that tasted like pastries, not salted crap they sell here in the supermarket. All sorts of candy, delicious cakes.
In fact store food there was so good compering to U.S., importation and production of it here became a booming business with dozens of stores opening in Russian communities, throughout NYC, in other cities as well. Most of prepared foods sold in the supermarkets here are garbage.
Cities had indoor pluming, in the country people used wells and outhouses.
Living quarters varied from dormitories to nice apartments and the rent was next to nothing. People didn't stay awake at night worrying how are they going to pay the rent or end up homeless if they couldn't. There were private houses and co-ops as well.
There were a few huge stores in every city and smaller stores in every neighborhood. Also inexpensive cafeterias and restaurants.

Interesting thing about the Soviet planned economy...it was all planned. Cities like Moscow, Kiev, Odessa, and the like were considerably better supplied than others. These were capital cities, or tourist cities, or cities that hosted foreign dignitaries. Let me ask you, even during the worst financial crises of our time in the US, have you ever seen Soviet 1980s conditions in the US? That kind of system was never sustainable and was always doomed to fail. And until recently, we were going strong. You know, until the socialists started to take hold of the levers of power here. The Soviet union was born in 1918 or so, and died in 1991. 73 years. One generation. A person could be alive both before and after the Soviet Union. And it started to collapse a decade before, which is about the only thing you got right. Let's also not forget the millions who were killed before WW2 ever started. My grandmother was alive during the holodomor. But you had "delicious food" in Odessa. All the shit we are going through right now is the result of the push towards socialism.
