I find people like him are usually beyond saving, but at least this way others can get a glimpse of life in the Soviet Union. I was somewhat lucky actually. I never went hungry. My parents had some land where they grew vegetables and fruits, and my dad would help offload trucks at grocery stores. Not because it paid anything, but because they could skim a little off the shipment and divide amongst the crew. I ate a lot of potatoes and cream of wheat. Still can't look at cream of wheat to this day.

There is an old Russian saying, "not by bread alone". Your whole argument is based on materialistic view of life. Having more is obviously better than having less, but is it all there is to life.

Being homeless and living on the street is not better than living with family members. Several generation households, where people take care of each other is still very common throughout Europe, it's not just a Soviet thing. Grandparents help with raising kids and get taken care of when they get old and frail as opposed to ending their life in a nursing home, neglected and abused.

Yes, there was a privileged class in the Soviet Union, I doubt it is possible not to have one in any system, however financial split between classes was nothing compared to the split in this country. In the Soviet Union, members of the ruling class actually received a stiffer punishment for misconduct and corruption, in the U.S. elites rarely get prosecuted and almost never convicted.

Chronic shortages of consumer goods and inefficiency of centralized economy is what eventually led to the downfall of the system, but it is foolish to believe there was nothing great about it. It transformed a backwards agrarian country into a super power. Defeated brown plague that swept up Europe. Created first rate public education system. Led the world in space exploration, sports. Led the world in a fight against Colonialism. Championed women's rights and racial equality when it mattered, instead of trying to catch decades later by discrimination against white males.

The biggest mistake that was made by Gorbachev and other reformers was trusting the West and foolishly believing in its good intentions and genuine desire to improve the lives of Russian people. They simply didn't understand the concept of geopolitics. Yeltsin on the other hand was a sell out.

So, why wasn't the west worried about our best and brightest going the other way ?

We were always technologically superior, certainly an American scientist defecting to Russia would have been a far more valuable catch than the other way ?

But anyone who wanted could have walked up to the gate in berlin and said "take me to your leader" anytime they wanted.
