Wow. I think I will suck it up for 17 more years haha25%, before taxes plus extra stuff like latchkey and dance and stuff that ends up being almost another $400 a month.

It is remembursement for money spent through out the year. Most departments supply the uniforms and equipment etc.Is the allowance given yearly or is it s one time thing? I know Court officers get a yearly allowance and if they don't need to buy new stuff (they rarely do) they pocket the money. When I had to but new suits for my previous job tax payers didn't pick up the tab.

yet y'all sure dont "lay low because of the politics" when its time for a contract...
I think that much of this has to do with the mindset of entitlement. This is the first Union that I have ever been part of. I have never needed a union or a contract to take care of me. Many Union members have been "Union" for so long, they forget, or never knew, what the non-union world looks like.
Too many times Union members forget that nothing if free. If they are not paying for something, it is, well, it's free. No, no it is not. With Public Unions, Police, Fire Teachers and the like, the Tax Payers are footing the bill. Private Unions are just as bad. They want and want and the hell to whoever is paying the bill. Nothing is free.
Many in the union feel they are entitled to whatever they need and or want. The DESERVE the best equipment, they DESERVE the best medical, they DESERVE the best of everything that they can get.
I like that everything that I need or want for the job is mine. I can buy the best of whatever "it" is or I can be cheap and buy the crappiest. I can do my own research and make my own decision.
Hey, let's make our soldiers and marines pay for their equipment too. -lol
They used to use DA revolvers and shot better. Plenty of people can hit with 12 pound triggers. I have shot with the NY2 spring, a well trained person can still be plenty effective. If it's all you train on it should not be a huge issue. For someone with weak hands it might become a bigger issue though. The NYPD gets a bad rap for marksmanship and they have had some terrible performances (2 for 80). That being said I would guess they fall into the average when it comes to nation wide police shootings with regards to hits versus shots fired.NYC cops can't hit their targets due to almost 12 lb trigger pull on those wrotten double action pistols.. Try shooting a pistol with a 12lb pull and double action. They are all over the place..that's why they shoot 80 rounds and score 2 hits...well that and the training is not so intense either
Its usually never the gun. The gun always shoots better than the person pulling the trigger
The union rep is at it again.....It is remembursement for money spent through out the year. Most departments supply the uniforms and equipment etc.
A rookie NYPD cop has to shell out about 3,000 dollars before they even see their first paycheck. The uniform allowance after taxes is about 600 dollars take home and is paid at the end of the year. Do the math. It's about 5 years before they break even on the it . This doesn't include incurring cost of cleaning, fixing, or replacing equipment. Cops like college freshmen put on a few pounds and have to replace items
I'm a contractor, I have thousands of dollars in tools that no one but me paid for. That's not including my uniforms and boots. Some of my specialty tools can run upwards of $1200, something like that breaks and I'm hosed. It'd be like you guys showing up to work without your handcuffs, might as well not even show up.

Let's do the math. 1000 a year for 34,000 officers. That's about 34,000,000 a year from the tax payers. You know darn well cops are not spending that money every year on uniforms (even after it's taxed). The new hires (and any cop) can also write off any expenses by the way. A NYPD shirt is like $30 and a pair of pants is about $35. After the initial $2500 (I'm reading it's not 3k but around 2500) is covered it's a few hundred a year offices most likely pocket. If that 2500 expense is written off it's actually even less of a burden. A person required to go out and buy a weeks worth of suits for an office job will spend at least that and not get an allowance for it. I won't be shedding any tears for someone getting $650 a year right around Christmas time (funny how that worked out) to use for anything. How many cops would rather have uniforms issued and not get the $? I would guess none once the initial expense is covered. My brother graduated from the academy last year. I will ask him what he had to pay initially.
I don't complain about what I make. But imagine if you were the NYPD cop who sees every one of the police departments paying their cops 50 to 100,000 dollars more than you for less work. NYPD detectives and Lt's leave the NYPD to become rookies in other departments they leave for a new department who have as much as twelve years before they reach their new top pay.$2500 in gear to start
Same... bought a used van, + tools, + material stock, i was at about $20k before i saw a nickle.
I love listening to civil servants with top teir salary and the best benefits complain about their pay and benefits.
my family health plan with no vision or dental and an $8k deductable costs me $1660/m.
I make more than most of my NYPD friends and many of them work in worse conditions
Google it yourself. How about the unnecessary equipment they are forced to buy like a whistle or belt keepers. How they have to buy the recruit grey shirts then buy the blue after the academy. Or the academy gym uniform.
I know they are forced to buy what is sold at the academy when they first get hired so if they already had something, even if they had one (say their family member is already a cop gave them one), it doesn't matter. They have to buy it from the academy.( this might have changed since my friends were there), I don't know if a different whistle would be authorized. I don't any cops with time on that actually carries one.Can they choose whatever whistle they want or are they mandated to use a certain one? A Fox 40 is ridiculously loud and is like $5. A Storm is louder and like $7, but probably too large.
Aren't belt keepers like $10?
