NYS AR-15 question

Hey guys.
I just saw a thread asking a similar question. I didn't want to hijack it so I decided to start a new one.
I have a Democrat friend(I have a strong feeling he isn't a Democrat anymore). He is the weirdest Democrat tho. He doesn't believe in abortion. He doesn't support the ABC2+++++++ movement. He doesn't like Oil companies, but love muscle cars and motorcycles (he doesnt own either of those but he loves seeing them and talking about them) Aaaaand he hated guns with a passion...... until the pandemic hit..
He knows I own a couple of guns (G19. G44, Ruger10/22). Hell, he was one of my references to get my pistol permit. He said repeatedly he doesn't like gun owners but since he knew me, and he knows I'm a law abiden citizen he was willing to be one of my references.
I told him that just like me. Every other gun owner was not a crazy person and that they were all law abiden citizens.
That's why they follow the whole process to get their pistol permits.

Soooo. He bought a house in Newburgh the other day. And all of a sudden he started asking me questions about guns. What guns were legal in NY. What he needed to do to get a permit. Etc. Etc. He have seen my guns. I've shown him how to take them apart How to clean them. Etc. Etc. I'm starting to think he is secretly in love with them.

The other day he asked me if AR-15s were legal in N.Y.S, and if he needed a permit to buy one. I asked him why he wanted to know, and he said..... I'm looking at all the stuff that's happening around the world and even here with the protest last year, so I want to buy one so I can protect my property and my family just in case something happens!!! What a fucking turn of events!!!
I'm sorry for the long post but I needed to give you a quick story about my friend's background. I didn't know how to answer his question because honestly, I have no clue about ARs. Can you guys tell, ME now, if AR 15 are legal or if he needs to do something special to be able to buy one? Or if he needs a permit etc. Etc?. Any info would be helpful. Who knows. Maybe I buy one in the future too.

The great irony is.... He's partly correct and it's his own fault.

There are definitely alphabet bois here lurking trying to catch people doing things. The even more ironic part is they are put into power by people like your friend whom he is afraid of. How about them apples.


The gun owners jumping through these oppressive hoops and limitations are good honest people. They are no threat to your friend. Anyone can buy anything on the black market. Laws only work for people willing to follow them, and those willing to follow them are no threat. It's the same conversation I have with people who are non gun owners about "no gun zones" and specifically places like schools. I make the point they are useless, they only stop people who aren't actually a threat in the first place. Anyone planning to do harm is already willing to break the law so only people who aren't going to break the law and therefore aren't a threat in the first place follow them.



If your friend isn't comfortable with an AR-15 since they're black and scary and apparently we can't rattle can them anymore in NY (thanks NY for that one) maybe he should get something like a mini14.

The simplest way is an AR-15 with a mag lock. The slightly more cumbersome and confusing way is to get a totally featureless ar15. Tell him even more reassuring is the democrats who wrote the bill did such a piss poor job that even people on a gun forum can't agree on the details of what is actually in or out of compliance with the law.

So with the unrest is your friend worried about like the BurnLootMurder rioters coming for him? That would be truly ironic.


Maybe just convince your friend he should leave the progressive plantation and think for himself. It sounds like perhaps he's in the middle of taking the red pill.


Tell him the Gods honest truth the overwhelming majority of gun owners are very good people who legitimately just want to be left alone and stop being told they're nuts, wrong or criminals for liking guns and wanting certain things. The 2a is for everyone and has nothing to do with hunting.

The AR is a great platform, probably the most popular in the US as far as volume. They're like Legos for adults (real adults, not man-bun soy boys)

If he's just wanting to get started, I'd suggest the beginners route with things like you're 10/22 or something of that nature. Then move up to the good stuff.

I think he is opening his eyes. He definitely doesn't agree with what Brandon is doing. He was blinded by the media. The guy only watches MSNBC, CNN, and stuff like that. And we worked in a super left leaning company so he doesn't hear counter arguments or other opinions.
Anyway. I went to the gun shop and it turned out he can't buy the AR he wanted. The shop owner showed me the one he can own in NYS.




He didn't like the NY legal one because it was $950. Then he wanted to buy a Ruger 10/22 takedown. But the gun shop didn't have it. I have called multiple gun shops around the area and they don't have it either. If any of you know of a gun shop in NYS that has a takedown model please let me know.

The best part is no one can even agree what is or is not acceptable as a mag lock.

Most people just put a mag lock on and call it "in compliance". Others insist on using epoxy to make it even more "permanent".


The single biggest reason I can think of for a fixed mag route is if you plan to use it as your SHTF/WROL rifle or you are planning to move to a free state in the near future.

It’s kind of funny that it took him moving to Newburgh to realize he should probably have a gun lmao. I also agree with having him join the forum. If he’s too scared to even look at objects that he is legally allowed to own, how is he going to survive physically holding one without freaking out and ND’ing. Also, friends don’t let friends make terrible firearm choices…don’t let him think or choose his first defensive firearm to be a .22lr like a Ruger 10/22 Takedown is a good idea. Another thing I agree on is a defensive weapon should definitely have the option of detachable magazines. Having a fixed magazine on a defensive firearm is an absolutely terrible idea for many reasons. You run out of ammo and you gotta load it one round at a time unless you try and use one of those speed loaders (which aren’t that great anyway). But magazines themselves fail and can be the reason for a firearm is having malfunctions like a failure to feed, double feeds…Now you have a shitty mag that’s locked in a gun that won’t feed reliably. Doesn’t matter how many times you use one of those speed loaders to reload it, it’s just going to keep shitting the bed.

Probably not. Too many shotguns, pistols, swords, axes, knives, and bad attitudes for home defense. don't need a .223 blowing through the bad guy, through the wall, through the neighbor, etc.

There's just something so satisfying about opening up a bad guy with a battle axe. Until you have to clean up, that is.

For your friend I would suggest a Ruger 10/22 not for home defense but because he is new to shooting he is going to need trigger time! Then for HD I would go with a Ruger PC9 very similar to the 10/22 and not as over penetrating as an AR, If he is set on a 5.56rd also look at the Ruger Mini 14 he may find it more eye appealing the those NY compliant AR you posted (I know I do!!) Then there is the FightLite SCR but they seem to be near impossible to find.

Now all of the rifles I have mentioned I own and the order I would go with myself is the order I posted.

Mini 14 2nd (It is shorter the my SCR)

SCR 3rd

I would also add in there a 20 gauge shot gun less recoil for a smaller person and still get the job do.

I agree but if more and more democrats own guns it makes it difficult for them to ban them as we’re seeing currently. We won’t see any meaningful gun laws federally.

Sadly I think those Democrats that vote for gun rights as their major issue are akin to being unicorns. They're so rare it's almost mythical.

I'm convinced they are statist idealogues putting their party above all else. If they are gun owners they're typically fudds who are ok with citizens being restricted from semi autos since you don't need them to hunt with. And a fudd is worse than an anti gunner because they are ubiquitously dragged out of the closet when the media wants to interview gun owners opinions on proposed anti gun legislation. They are dangerous to our cause.

It's been a while since I revisited anything about mag locks. What's the TLDR on determinations around them? I ask cause you seem more versed in this than myself, since I don't have an AR currently -- but may be getting one this summer pending how things go with the raise at work.
